Statement of Work
Communications and Social Media Assistant
Contract Period: 1 Oct 2016 to 30 Sep 2017 (Tentative)
Work Area: Washington DC and Puerto Rico
The contractor will work out of the Forest Service (FS) Washington
Office (WO) of Communications, with possible periodic travel to
Puerto Rico and/or project sites in Latin America and Caribbean. The
USFS Office of Communications will provide office space and access to FS computer system.
Scope of Work
The contractor will provide communications/journalism/social media/publications support and assistance to the International Institute of Tropical Forestry (IITF) and our partners and the USDA FS Washington Office of Communications and Sustainable Ops/Climate Change
Office as follows:
1. Develop press releases, success/activity stories, and technical fact sheets about IITF and about national level projects and activities to include Research, State & Private
Forestry, National Forest System, and International technical areas.
2. Develop, manage and provide information to social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, etc.) for IITF and WO project activities. This will include, but not be limited to, USAID Climate Change project in Dominican Republic and bio-monitoring research and sustainable tourism project in Nicaragua, the San Juan Urban
Field Station, the WO Office of Communications and Sustainable Ops/ Climate
Change activities.
3. Interface with IITF and WO counterparts to network and share information.
4. Provide information to and cooperate with all IITF technical areas (Research, State &
Private Forestry, Chemical Lab, GIS/Remote Sensing Lab, and Library) and WO technical offices (Climate Change, Sustainable Ops/Communications and others) as directed.
5. Assist with organization and implementation of IITF and WO technical events/activities.
6. Interface with the WO-Office of Communications to share information and provide national level communications support related to IITF projects and activities.
Deliverables
1. Press releases, minimum of 8 (English/Spanish)
2. Success or activity stories, minimum of 5
3. Technical fact sheets and brochures about IITF and WO projects and activities, minimum of 3
4. Support provided to IITF/International Cooperation Unit for all project activities.
5. Support provided to IITF and WO cooperators to disseminate project and technical information.
6. Others as assigned.

Required Skills and Knowledge
• Knowledge of and experience in working with Government Publishing Office, USDA, and Forest Service publishing standards and guidelines.
• Knowledge of and experience in writing US Forest Service blogs and the blog submission and approval process.
• Knowledge of and experience in writing press releases and feature stories in USFS format.
• Adept in the use of publishing software (Adobe InDesign, Photoshop, Acrobat Pro), Microsoft Office Suite (specifically, Outlook, Word, and PowerPoint).
• Skill in using Macintosh and PC computers and software and USFS computer system.
• Knowledge of Forest Service social media channels and the production of memes and postings for such.
• Knowledge about USFS Washington DC communications/public relations office.
• Professional training in communications.
• Bachelor Degree in Communications and/or Journalism.
• Ability to work in both English and Spanish language, reading/writing/speaking.
Additional Information
The contractor will work with national headquarters Office of Communication, Sustainable
Ops/Climate Change Office, IITF staff and partners. The contractor will utilize office space and computer facilities at Office of Communication, Washington DC. The work will done under the supervision of USFS International Cooperation Program Manager.
