PART 1: GENERAL

1.1 SUMMARY

A. Description of Work: Furnishing labor, equipment, transportation, supplies, and materials, to renovate an existing office space (32’ x 77’) in the USFS Almanor District Office building. The work consists of removing: carpeting and plywood underlayment, ceiling light fixtures, electrical switches & outlets, electrical wiring & boxes, door frames & doors, partition walls, miscellaneous items attached to walls and ceilings, plywood paneling from partition walls, windows, and some exterior siding; repairing: squeaky subfloors and soft spots;

installing: electrical wiring & boxes, door frames & doors, sheetrock on walls & ceilings, taping & texturing sheetrock, wood trim, plywood underlayment, electrical outlets, data ports, & switches, LED light fixtures, windows, shear panels on exterior walls, carpet and baseboard; rough framing door openings and adding wall studs and blocking as needed in walls; priming & painting walls & ceilings; and doing daily clean-up.

B. Location: Work under this Contract is located in Plumas County, California. The work site is at the USFS Almanor Ranger Station, 900 E. Hwy 36, Chester, California. The actual area to be renovated is located in the District Office in a section called the Timber Wing. The work site location is shown on the location map.

C. Period of Performance: Sixty (60) calendar days. Estimated start date of work is 15 May 2017 with an estimated completion date of 15 July 2017.

1.3 DEFINITIONS

A. Approvals: Approval of the submittals is an indication that the Contractor's submittals have been reviewed and that there are no objections, except as noted. Approval of deviations shall apply only to those deviations or omissions from the requirements of the drawings and specifications brought to the Contracting Officer's attention in writing. After approval of an item, submit a substitute for approval when the approved item cannot be purchased or delivered in time to avoid delay in completion of the project.

1.4 SUBMITTALS

A. Scope: Submittals include design computations, shop drawings, manufacturers' literature, as-built drawings, samples, and maintenance manuals.

B. Requirements: Refer to specifications for submittals required. Allow at least 5 working days for review. Submittals shall be delivered to the Contracting Officers Representative (COR) at the Lassen National Forest Headquarters Office in Susanville, CA.

C. Identification of Submittals: Completely identify each submittal by showing at least the following information:

1. Name and address of submitter, plus name and telephone number of the individual to contact for further information.

2. Name of project as it appears in these specifications.

3. Contract number, drawing number, and specification section number to which the submittal applies.

4. Whether this is an original submittal or resubmittal.

5. Each item shall clearly note the manufacturer's name and address, trade name, product, lot, style, color, catalog designation or model number, and locations of use.

1.5 CERTIFICATES OF CONFORMANCE

A. Requirements: The Contracting Officer may permit use, prior to sampling and testing, of materials when accompanied by Certificates of Conformance. Materials used on the basis of a Certificate of Conformance may be sampled and tested. Installation of materials on the basis of Certificates of Conformance shall not relieve the Contractor of responsibility for incorporating materials which conform to the requirements of the drawings and specifications. Material not conforming to those requirements will be subject to rejection, whether in place or not.

B. Format: The Certificate of Conformance provided by the supplier shall:

1. State that the named product conforms to the Contract requirements.

2. Either be accompanied with a certified copy of the test results, or certify that such test results are on file with the manufacturer and will be furnished to the Contracting Officer upon request.

3. Provide the name and address of the manufacturer, the testing agency, and the date of tests.

4. Set forth the means of identification which will permit field determination of the product delivered as being the product covered by the certification.

1.6 QUALITY ASSURANCE

A. Codes and Standards: The work shall comply with codes and standards applicable to each type of work and as listed in the individual sections of these specifications. This Contract incorporates materials, applications, and tests by reference, with the same force and effect as when they were given in full text.

B. Conflict: Where a conflict occurs between reference documents and project specifications, the project specifications shall govern.

C. Measurements: Where approved manufacturer's diagrams and shop drawings give specific measurements or rough-in dimensions for equipment, these dimensions shall take precedence over dimensions indicated on the drawings.

D. Equipment: Prior to ordering equipment, verify dimensions and functions of equipment proposed for use including the electrical service requirements. Be certain the equipment is compatible with the structural and architectural features of the work, avoids conflicts with equipment of other crafts, and that it will fit in the space provided.

1.7 DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING

A. Delivery: Protect products incorporated into the work from damage while in transit to the site. Products must be delivered in original unopened containers with manufacturer's name, brand designation, and contents legibly indicated.

B. Storage: Provide temporary storage facilities for products. Storage shall comply with the manufacturer's instructions. The storage area shall permit access for inspection and handling.

C. Handling: Load and unload products protecting them from damage.

1.8 PROJECT/SITE CONDITIONS

A. Access to the Work:

1. Access to the site is on paved roads. The USFS Almanor Ranger Station is located right along Hwy 36 in Chester, CA.

2. Access shall be confined to existing roads and parking areas.

3. The work location is shown on the location map.

4. Operations shall be scheduled so that work is completed between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, except on Federal Holidays. Permission to work an alternate schedule or hours outside those designated may be requested from the Contracting Officer.

B. Site Conditions:

1. This site has utilities available. Potable water, electrical

01009-11 power, and toilets shall be available for the Contractor.

Cellular phone service is available.

C. Climatic Conditions and Construction Season:

1. The elevation at the site is approximately 4,535 feet located in the pine forests of Northeast California.

2. Construction activities in this area are typically year round. The actual start date will be determined at the time of Contract Award and Pre-Work Conference.

D. Environmental Considerations:

1. Fuel or oil spills occurring in soil during the work of this project shall be excavated to a depth of 12 inches beyond contaminated material and removed from the work site. Prescribed measures to prevent water pollution to nearby water resources shall be strictly observed.

2. The Contractor shall clean-up litter and discarded material each day during construction. All construction debris and trash shall be deposited into trash receptacles while on the jobsite then removed from the jobsite and disposed of at an approved landfill.

E. Material Stockpile /Storage and Equipment Staging:

1. Adequate space exists at the project site for parking vehicles, equipment, and stockpiling materials. Final locations will be field-approved by the COR.

2. Contractor shall operate and park vehicles and equipment within existing roadways and parking areas.

1.9 SEQUENCING AND SCHEDULING

A. Work Schedule: The schedule shall be submitted at the pre-work conference. When requested, submit an updated schedule within 3 calendar days. As a minimum, the estimated start and completion dates shall be shown in the estimate.

PART 2: PRODUCTS

(There are no applicable requirements.)

PART 3: EXECUTION

3.1 PROJECT MEETINGS

A. Pre-Work Conference:

1. Will be held prior to the start of work. The Contractor will be notified in advance of meeting time, date and place. The purpose will be to review required work, project drawings and specifications, construction schedules, payroll and payments, and administrative provisions of the Contract.

2. The Contractor, subcontractors and the persons responsible for coordination of the work shall be present at the meeting.

3. Be prepared to summarize and explain procedures planned for the project and present the submittals requested in the specifications.

B. Progress Meetings:

1. To be held at the project site, or as determined by the Contracting

Officer.

2. May be called by either the Contracting Officer or the Contractor.

Request shall state who should attend and include an agenda.

C. Final Inspection:

1. To be held at the project site, or as determined by the Contracting

Officer.

2. Notify the Contracting Officer in writing at least 5 working days before the completion date so the Government can schedule final inspection.

3. The superintendent shall be present during this inspection.

3.2 PREPARATION

A. Work Limits: Will be established by the Contracting Officer and will be confined to the Timber Wing Section of the Ranger Station.

3.3 SALVAGEABLE ITEMS

A. Requirements: Salvageable items consisting of light fixtures, doors, and electrical items shall become the property of the Contractor.

Items which have become the property of the Contractor shall be removed from the work site. Salvageable items that are to be reused such as Emergency Light fixtures, Exit Signs, intercom speakers, viewing mirrors, HVAC vent covers, and any other items identified by the Contracting Officer shall be removed by the Contractor and stored in an area so the items will be protected and not damaged.

3.4 DISPOSAL OF DEBRIS

A. Requirements: Items or debris not designated as salvage for the Government shall become the property of the Contractor. Disposal of materials in a legal manner and payment of fees required is the Contractor's responsibility. Sale of material onsite is not allowed unless authorized in writing by the Contracting Officer. When hazardous materials are encountered during demolition operations, comply with applicable federal, state, and local regulations, laws, and ordinances concerning removal, handling, and protection against exposure or environmental pollution. Burning of removed materials is not permitted on the work site.

3.5 AS-BUILT DRAWINGS

A. General Requirements: A complete set of full-sized prints, furnished by the Contracting Officer for this purpose only, shall be kept at the site. As the job progresses, continuously maintain as-built drawings of the work. The changes shall be noted legibly in red pencil or red ink. These drawings shall be submitted to the Contracting Officer prior to final inspection. Should final inspection reveal changes in the project not so noted on the as-built drawings, record these changes on the as-built drawings within 5 working days of final inspection and deliver completed as-built drawings to the Contracting Officer.

B. Installation Changes: Records shall be maintained of actual installations where at variance with the work shown, where changed, or where not otherwise located by dimension, elevation or other reference on the Contract drawings. Actual locations and elevations of equipment and components such as pipe, conduits and ducts occurring within concealed areas shall be recorded by actual dimensions referenced from readily accessible and permanent structures or monuments.

3.6 WARRANTY

A. Requirements: Materials and equipment furnished under this Contract shall be covered by the most favorable commercial warranties given to customers for such materials or equipment. The rights or remedies provided herein are in addition to and do not limit rights afforded to the Government by other clauses of this Contract. With respect to warranties, expressed or implied, from manufacturers or suppliers for materials or equipment furnished under the Contract the Contractor shall:

1. Obtain warranties that would be given in normal commercial practices.

2. Require warranties to be executed, in writing, for the benefit of the Government.

3. Submit warranties to the Contracting Officer prior to the final inspection.

PART 4: MEASUREMENT AND PAYMENT

4.1 METHOD OF MEASUREMENT

A. Units: This is a lump sum contract. There will be no separate measurement for individual items of work done under this Contract. The work described in this section will not be measured for payment.

4.2 BASIS OF PAYMENT

A. Payment: No direct payment for the work described under this section will be made. Consideration for this item and all other items in this contract shall be included in the base bid price. Payment will be made at the Contract price, as indicated in the Bid Schedule, and will include full compensation for the work described in the Contract.

MINOR DEMOLITION FOR REMODELING

SECTION 02222

A. Section Includes: The demolition and disposal, or removal and salvage of selected portions of a building, and components; including removing designated equipment and fixtures, capping utilities and cleanup in preparation for renovation. The work shall consist of removing all existing ceiling light fixtures, all the plywood paneling on the partition walls, all carpeting and plywood underlayment if needed, all doors and frames, all windows, some partition walls, all HVAC ceiling grill covers, all emergency light fixtures, all exit signs, all fire extinguishers, all intercom speakers, all safety mirrors, and all electrical wiring, switches, outlets, and junction boxes that will not be reused. The Contractor shall leave the existing partition stud wall framing in place as well as the ceiling plywood paneling. The HVAC grill covers, emergency light fixtures, exit signs, intercom speakers, safety mirrors, and fire extinguishers shall be reused and reattached to walls and ceilings after the walls and ceilings are painted.

1.2 SUBMITTALS

A. General: Submittals shall be according to Section 01009 - General Information and Requirements.

B. Demolition Plan: Submit three copies of the demolition plan, including proposed salvage and removal procedures to the Contracting Officer for approval 14 days before work is started.

C. Drawings: Submit three copies of drawings showing the location of capped and plugged service lines.

1.3 QUALITY ASSURANCE

A. Regulations: Comply with federal, state, and local hauling and disposal regulations. In addition to the requirements of the "Contract clauses," safety requirements shall conform to ANSI A10.6.

1.4 PROJECT/SITE CONDITIONS

A. Work Limits: Work limits shall be established by the Contracting Officer. They shall be within the confines of the Timber Wing inside the Almanor District Office.

B. Environmental Considerations: Use means necessary to prevent dust becoming a nuisance to adjacent work areas within the District Office, to the public, to neighbors, and to other work being performed on or near the site.

(There are no applicable requirements.)

3.1 PREPARATION

A. Requirements: Provide, erect, and maintain temporary barriers and security devices. Notify Contracting Officer of work which may affect adjacent structures, potential noise, outage, or disruption.

Coordinate with the Contracting Officer.

1. Do not interfere with use of adjacent buildings.

2. Utility services, pedestrian, and automotive access to the section of the building to be renovated shall remain intact until this area is totally vacated.

3. Debris shall not be allowed to accumulate and block access to other areas of the building.

4. If Contractor's employees must move through existing areas of the building to gain access to the demolition work area, the Contractor shall designate and mark such access routes and shall protect the existing building or repair any damage caused by movements of the Contractor's employees and equipment.

B. Traffic Control:

1. Do not close or obstruct roadways at the Ranger Station without written permission of the Contracting Officer.

2. Conduct operations with minimum interference to other public or private roadways.

C. Utilities: Gas, water, electricity, and other utility services shall be properly capped, removed or disconnected, only for the Timber Wing Section of the building, before the Contractor commences demolition activity. The rest of the buildings’ utility services shall remain intact and functional and shall not be disconnected from any utilities.

1. The Contractor shall notify utility companies in advance of demolition, so that the utilities may cap or disconnect utilities and retrieve any meters.

2. Contact the utility company to arrange for utility service required for demolition work and to assure that any onsite service utilized or installed is of adequate capacity. Protect temporary utilities.

3. Place markers to indicate the location of disconnected services.

Identify service lines and capped locations on Contract drawings.

3.2 PROTECTION

A. Adjacent Structures: Prevent movement or settlement of adjacent structures. Cease operations and notify Contracting Officer immediately if safety of adjacent structures appears to be endangered.

Do not resume operations until safety is restored.

1. Provide, erect and maintain barricades and lighting as required to protect employees, general public, workers, and adjoining property.

2. Erect weatherproof closures for exterior openings. Maintain exit requirements.

3. Erect and maintain dustproof partitions as required to prevent spread of dust, fumes, and smoke to other parts of the building.

On completion, remove partitions and repair damaged surfaces to match adjacent surfaces.

4. Keep necessary noise to a minimum. Noise levels above 90 db or impact levels above 2700 J (2000 ft-lbs) must be approved by the Contracting Officer.

B. Adjacent Landscaping: Protect existing landscaping materials and structures which are not to be renovated.

1. Prevent movement, settlement or collapse of adjacent services, sidewalks, driveways and trees.

2. Maintain egress and access at all times.

3. Do not close or obstruct roadways or sidewalks without approval by the Contracting Officer.

3.3 DEMOLITION

A. General: Disconnect, cap, and identify designated utilities.

Demolish components indicated, according to the approved demolition plan to accommodate new work, including that required for connection to the existing building.

1. Perform cutting and demolition by methods which will prevent damage to other portions of the work and provide proper surfaces to receive installation of repair and new work.

2. Perform fitting and adjusting of products to provide finished installation complying with the specified tolerances and finishes.

3.4 DISPOSAL OF DEBRIS

A. Requirements: Items or debris not designated as salvage for the Government shall become the property of the Contractor. The Contractor shall remove such materials from the site according to all applicable regulations. Do not allow excessive amounts of debris to accumulate onsite. Sale of material onsite is not allowed unless authorized in writing by the Contracting Officer.

3.5 CLEANUP

A. Requirements: Remove demolished material from the site daily as work progresses. Leave areas of work in a clean condition.

PART 4: MEASUREMENT AND PAYMENT (NOT USED)

ROUGH CARPENTRY

SECTION 06100

A. Section Includes: Furnishing and installing sawn lumber, sheathing, fasteners and supports. Frame in new rough openings for doors as needed. Add additional wall studs and blocking as needed in interior partition walls and in window areas where shear panels are to be installed. Install sheathing at shear panels. Provide plywood underlayment for carpeting.

1.2 SUBMITTALS

B. Manufacturer’s Literature: Submit 3 copies of the manufacturer’s descriptive data appropriately marked to indicate proposed items to be used on this project for the following materials:

1. Engineered wood products - Submitted information shall demonstrate that products meet the requirements of this section. Include delivery, storage, handling, and installation instructions.

2. Metal framing anchors - Indicate load capacities, corrosion protection, and evidence that products meet the requirements of this section.

3. Construction adhesives

4. Fasteners and supports

A. Failure Criteria: Not limited to the following:

1. Necessity of additional bracing, splicing, or replacing of any member in order to maintain structural integrity.

2. Settlement of walls or opening framing sufficient to cause cracks in applied finishes or to preclude the proper functioning of doors and windows.

3. Rupture of any metal connector.

4. Separation of members due to insufficient number of connectors being applied or being applied in such a manner as to cause failure of the members connected.

5. Evidence of wood fracture or cracking.

6. Deflection under allowable loading which causes cracking of gypsum board ceiling or which causes sagging or springiness of flooring.

7. Bowing of walls horizontally or bulging of walls vertically in excess of 1/4 inch (6.4 mm) in 8 feet-0 inch (2400 mm).

B. Labeling Requirements

1. Kiln dried and framing material shall be identified with an appropriate stamp on each piece according to WCLIB or WWPA.

2. Wood Structural Panels and Underlayment: Each panel of softwood shall be identified with the APA grade trademark, including type, grade, class, identification or span rating, and inspection and testing agency mark.

3. Engineered Wood Products: Each member shall be stamped to indicate product type, grade, CABO Report Number, and identification of independent inspection agency.

1.4 DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING

A. Storage: keep materials under cover and dry. Protect from weather and

06100 - 2 contact with damp or wet surfaces. Stack lumber, plywood, and other panels. Provide for air circulation within and around stacks and under temporary coverings.

B. Materials damaged during offloading, handling, or due to improper storage shall be replaced at no cost to the Government.

1.5 SEQUENCING AND SCHEDULING

A. Requirements: Coordinate construction of wall and opening framing with trades affected, i.e., electricians. Refer to drawings for locations of conditions which require special construction.

2.1 LUMBER

A. Lumber Standards: Comply with DOC PS-20, ‘‘American Softwood Lumber Standard,’’ and with applicable WCLIB or WWPA grading rules.

B. Species: Framing shall be dressed and surfaced Douglas Fir-Larch or Hem

Fir.

C. Moisture Content: 19 percent maximum at time of dressing for 2-inch nominal (38 mm actual) thickness or less.

D. Dimensions: All dimensions are nominal, unless otherwise indicated.

Where actual sizes are indicated, they are minimum dressed sizes for lumber.

E. Structural Lumber

1. Load Bearing Studs: Stud grade, No.2 grade or construction grade.

2. Joists: Structural grade, No.1 or better grade.

F. Non Structural Lumber

1. Non Load Bearing Studs, Plates, bracing, and Nailers: Stud grade.

2. Blocking and Miscellaneous lumber: Utility grade.

3. Furring, Grounds, and Bridging: No.3 grade.

2.2 WOOD STRUCTURAL PANELS

A. Wall Sheathing: APA Rated Sheathing, Exposure 1, Span Rating 32/16.

2.3 UNDERLAYMENT

A. General: Over smooth subfloors, provide underlayment not less than 1/4 inch (6.4 mm) thick. Over board or uneven subfloors, provide underlayment not less than 1/3 inch (8.7 mm) thick.

B. Plywood Underlayment for Carpet

1. Under 19/32 (15.1 mm) thick, APA Underlayment, Exposure 1, fully sanded face.

2. 19/32 inch (15.1 mm) thick or more: APA Rated Sturd-I-Floor panels, Exposure 1, touch sanded face.

2.3 INSTALLATION MATERIALS

A. Requirements: Furnish connection items required or shown on the drawings for joining framing members to each other or existing construction and to their supports.

B. Nails, Wire, Brads, and Staples: FS FF-N-105

C. Screws: ASME B18.6.1

D. Bolts, Nuts and Washers: Steel bolts complying with ASTM A 307, Grade A. Nuts shall be according to ASTM A 563. Provide cut washers or metal and malleable iron washers on wood under nuts.

E. Lag Bolts: ASME B18.2.1

F. Miscellaneous Metals: True to shape, well finished, free from imperfections, clean, and free from corrosion.

G. Finishing Materials: Where connectors are exposed to weather, embedded in concrete, in ground contact, or in an area of high humidity, provide fasteners with a hot-dip zinc coating per ASTM A 153 or Type 304 stainless steel.

3.1 GENERAL INSTALLATION

A. Install rough carpentry work in accordance with the Uniform Building Code, 1997 edition. Modify rough door openings to accommodate the new door sizes. Modify window openings to accommodate shear panels.

B. Set rough carpentry to required levels and lines, with members plumb, true to line, cut, and fitted.

C. Fit rough carpentry to other construction; scribe and cope as required for accurate fit. Correlate location of furring nailers, blocking, grounds, and similar supports to allow attachment of other construction.

D. Framing Standard: Comply with AFPA’s ‘‘Manual for Wood Frame

Construction,’’ unless otherwise indicated.

E. Do not splice structural members between supports.

F. Loading: Temporary construction loads which cause member stresses beyond design limits shall not be permitted.

3.2 FASTENERS AND SUPPORTS

A. Use common wire nails, unless otherwise indicated. Use finishing nails for finish work. Select fasteners of size that will not fully penetrate members where opposite side will be exposed to view or will receive finish materials. Make tight connections between members. Install fasteners without splitting wood; predrill as required.

B. Securely attach rough carpentry work to substrate by anchoring and fastening as indicated, complying with the following:

1. CABO NER-272 for power drive staples, P-nail, and allied fasteners.

2. Published requirements of metal framing anchor manufacturer.

Provide the number and kind indicated. Fill all nail holes with prescribed nails.

3. Nailing schedule in Table 23-II-B-1, Uniform Building Code, current edition.

C. Alignment: Prior to applying metal connectors or sheet metal items, care shall be taken to ascertain that the members to be connected are properly lined up with respect to each other and the remainder of the structure.

D. Spacing of Connectors: Conform to the end and edge minimum measurement for the size of the member concerned.

E. Drill holes 1/16 inch larger than bolt diameter.

3.3 WALL AND PARTITION FRAMING

B. Headers for openings shall be sized as noted below. Studs and cripples for openings shall be nailed together with 16d nails at 24 inches o.c.

Header material shall be spaced with continuous plywood or surfaced lumber spacers to equal the stud width. Where headers and cripples are noted on the drawings, those sizes shall supersede this list.

Provide miscellaneous blocking and framing as shown and as required to support facing materials, fixtures, specialty items, and trim.

D. Wall Plate Anchorage: Anchor bolts shall be installed at 6 ft-0 inch

(1800 mm) on center, maximum. There shall be a minimum of two bolts per piece with one bolt located within 12 inches of each end of each piece.

E. Wall Openings: Locate accurately allowing for scheduled door or window sizes, shim spaces, and applied trim as detailed.

F. Shear Wall: Cover with wall sheathing to match existing wall sheathing thickness. Shear walls require edge nailing at 3" o.c. and 12" o.c.

STANDARD STEEL FRAMES

SECTION 08113

1.1 SUMMARY:

A. Section Includes: Furnishing and installing interior steel door frames for 1-3/4 inch x 3’ x 6’ 8” wood flush doors.

1.2 SUBMITTALS:

A. General: Submittals shall be according to Section 01009 - General

Information and Requirements.

B. Manufacturer's Literature: Submit 3 copies of manufacturer's descriptive literature for the standard forms to be used on this project. Descriptive literature shall include data and details on frame construction including internal reinforcement.

C. Shop Drawings: Submit 3 copies of shop drawings of frames. Drawings shall indicate elevations of frames, details of frame construction to scale, metal gauges, reinforcement, hardware provisions, and installation details. Include a schedule showing locations of frames.

1.3 QUALITY ASSURANCE:

A. Failure Criteria: Not limited to the following:

1. Loosening of frame from supporting framing during normal usage.

2. Rusting of frame.

3. Wracking of frame sufficient to bind door.

4. Loosening of hardware due to failure of reinforcement to perform its function.

1.4 QUALITY ASSURANCE:

A. Labeling Requirements: Fire door frames and accessories shall bear the identifying label of the Underwriters' Laboratories, Inc.; in lieu of such label, the fire doors, frames, hardware, and accessories shall bear the label of a nationally recognized testing agency.

B. Testing Requirements: The testing agency shall be adequately equipped and competent to perform services equivalent to the inspection and certificate programs of the Underwriters' Laboratories, Inc., indicating that the units conform to the Underwriters' Laboratories, Inc.

1. Steel Astragal on Fire Doors: Astragal on pairs of labeled fire doors shall be according to NFPA 80 and Underwriters' Laboratories, Inc. requirements.

1.5 DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING:

A. Delivery: Frames of welded-unit construction shall be strapped together in pairs with the head of one frame inverted for bracing. As an alternate method, temporary steel spreaders shall be securely fastened to the bottom of each frame. Frames damaged during delivery

08113 - 2 shall be replaced. Ship knockdown frames in bundles.

B. Storage: At the site, frames shall be stored on platforms under cover. The storage spaces shall be in dry and accessible locations, adequately ventilated and free from dust or water. The use of nonvented plastic or canvas shelters that create a humidity chamber shall be avoided. A 1/4 inch space shall be provided between the frames. Do not remove temporary spreaders until bucks of welded frames are secured in place.

2.1 MATERIALS:

A. Anchors: Shall be the manufacturer's standard shapes and sizes designed to anchor the frame securely to the adjoining construction.

Anchors shall be of steel, painted with rust-inhibitive paint. All anchors shall be not lighter than 18 gauge.

1. Wall Anchors: A minimum of three anchors shall be provided for each jamb. Anchors shall be located opposite the top and bottom hinges and midway between top and bottom anchors.

2. Anchors for Fastening Frames to Wood Stud Partitions: Welded or otherwise securely fastened to the back of frames. Anchors shall be designed to be fastened to wood studs with nails. A minimum of four anchors per jamb.

3. Floor Anchors: Shall be provided at the bottom of each jamb member. Anchors shall be adjustable and drilled for 3/8-inch diameter anchor bolts.

2.2 MANUFACTURED UNITS:

A. Door Frames: Hollow metal frames shall be formed of 16 gauge cold rolled steel to sizes and shapes indicated and shall have full-welded-unit construction at corners. Additional reinforcing of frames for surface-applied hardware shall be built into the frame at the factory.

B. Joints of Welded-Type Frames: Corner joints of frames for doors shall be mitered or butted and face welded from the outside. Head and jamb members shall have mechanically interlocked joints with all contact edges closed tight. Welds shall be dressed flush and smooth, and shall present a neat appearance.

C. Joints for Knockdown-Type Frames: Corner joints shall be designed for simple field assembly of header to jamb members by concealed tenons, splice plates, or other type of concealed interlocking joint that will produce square and rigid corners and a tight fit. Joints shall be securely locked in place during erection and the alignment of adjoining members shall be maintained. Provide lock nuts for all bolted connections.

D. Mullions and Transom Bars: Shall be closed or tubular construction and shall member with heads and jambs and be butt-welded thereto or knockdown for field assembly. Bottom of door mullions shall have adjustable floor anchors and spreader connections.

E. Stops and Beads: Formed from 20 gauge steel and furnished with frames at interior glazed openings and other locations where fixed glass is indicated in pressed steel frames. Neoprene or felt gaskets shall be provided where indicated. Beads shall be secured to frames with oval-head, countersunk, cross-recessed-head self-tapping sheet metal screws or concealed-type clips and fasteners. Either type shall be spaced approximately 12 to 16 inches oc. Beads having a molded shape shall be mitered at corners. Square or rectangular beads shall be mitered at corners.

F. Strike Dust Guard: The strike jamb for single leaf doors shall be provided with a door strike protected by a dust guard welded in place.

G. Frames for Cased Openings: Fabricated of same material, gauge, and assembly as specified for metal door frames except door stops and preparation for hardware shall be omitted.

2.3 FABRICATION:

A. Shop-Primed Finish: Steel surfaces of hollow metal frames for interior openings shall receive a phosphate treatment, and a shop coat of rust-inhibitive paint. The phosphate treatment shall be a type standard with, or as recommended by, the manufacturer. The prime coat shall be a type especially developed for materials treated by phosphates and adapted to application by dipping or spraying.

3.1 PREPARATION:

A. General: Frames shall be reinforced, drilled and tapped to receive mortised finish hardware. Frame preparation for hardware shall be according to the applicable requirements of ANSI A115 and SDI 107.

Drilling and tapping for surface-applied hardware shall be done at the project site and shall be according to SDI 107. Hardware shall be located according to the requirements of SDI 100, as applicable. Door frames shall be punched to receive a minimum of three rubber door silencers on latch jamb of single doors and one silencer for each leaf in heads of double door frames. Lock strikes shall be set out to provide clearance for silencers.

3.2 INSTALLATION:

A. Steel Frames: Shall be set accurately in position, plumbed, aligned and braced securely until permanent anchors are set. The bottom of frames shall be anchored securely to floors with expansion bolts or with powder-actuated fasteners. Wall anchors shall be built-in or secured to adjoining construction as specified.

B. Fire Door Frames: Installation of fire door frames, including hardware and operational characteristics, shall be according to NFPA 101 requirements.

3.3 FIELD QUALITY CONTROL:

A. Inspection Requirements: Door frame sections shall be double-rabbeted

08113 - 4 and designed for use with the wall construction indicated. Finish frames shall be strong and rigid; neat in appearance; square, plumb, and true; and free from defects, warp or buckle. Molded members shall be clean-cut; straight and true. Corner joints shall be well formed and in true alignment. Fastenings shall be concealed where practicable. Exposed welded and soldered joints shall be dressed smooth.

3.4 CLEANING:

A. Requirements: Upon completion, exposed surfaces of frames shall be cleaned thoroughly. Mastic smears and other unsightly marks shall be removed. Frames shall be in prime condition, ready for application of finish paint.

3.5 PROTECTION:

A. Requirements: Frames shall be protected from damage. Frames that are damaged prior to completion and acceptance of the project shall be repaired as approved, or replaced.
