Silvicultural Goal and Desired Condition
The silvicultural objective is to increase the health and vigor of the stand through stocking control of selected crop trees and/or pruning of white pine. Stocking control gives desired species (primarily the long lived serals (PP and/or WL, but also other species) sufficient growing space to maintain health and vigor. Pruning improves white pine resiliency to lethal blister rust infection.
End Result- specifics
1. Tree Thinning
· The average spacing for leave trees is 9 feet x 9 feet (538 tpa). The spacing may be varied by 50% to select the best leave tree based on the prescription and characteristics of desirable trees.
· Acceptable density of crop trees (tpa):(400) minimum (800) maximum
· Leave tree selection: (Trees will be considered S1 in the thinning inspection form, using 1/50th acre plot). These trees are most generally the tallest, healthiest, most vigorous trees free of defect or damage due to insect, disease, physical or mechanical causes are to be retained on the site. To maximize the retention of white pine component within the stands, no white pine will be cut. Trees that are to be ignored (not to be cut): Code as S4 trees in inspection-- White pine.
· TPA by species to be retained:WL-150,WP-140,DF-75,GF-100,WRC-75,WH-200.
· Species Preference: WL,WP,WRC,GF,WH,DF.
· Maximum tree diameter at dbh to cut: 6 "+ Maximum stump height: 8”
· Minimum tree height to cut: 2 ft.
· Small Tree maximum height: 3 ft. Trees smaller than these trees but taller than the minimum tree height are required to be cut however any that are left are considered Category C deficiencies and (a tolerance of 5% of the maximum stocking range of 800 is allowed for leaving a small quantity on the unit).
2. Pruning: YES___X___ NO______ White pine selected for pruning, shall be free of blister rust on bole and have no branch infections closer than 4 inches to the bole. Trees shall be pruned of all branches up to 50% of the height of the tree to a maximum height of 8'. All branches shall be cut to within 1/2" of the limb collar. Pruning shall be done with hand pruning shears, loppers or handsaws.
Existing condition: Stand has 140 WP/ac of which 32% are dead or lethal, 1% prunable with 67% clean, leaving 95 WP/ac prunable.
· Minimum tree height to 8 ft.
· No. of trees to be pruned per acre: 51-100/ac
· No. of trees white pine ignored: est.0/ac
· Maximum height of branches to be pruned: 8ft.
3. Girdling: YES _____ NO __X____ Undesirable damage, diseased or otherwise cull trees greater than the DBH cut. Girdling shall be a band(s), deep enough and wide enough to ensure death of tree.
4. Slash Treatment: Slash depths will be kept below 2 feet. Where average slash depths exceed 2 feet, lopping will be required to bring it down to 2 feet. Slash will be pulled back 10 feet from road cut banks and fill slopes.
5. Special Treatment Areas:
(a). YES _____ NO ___X___ In special treatment Riparian Zones identified by district biologist (category 1 fish bearing streams): no thinning within 75 feet of a floodplain. Between 75 and 200 feet a 7x7 ft. spacing will be applied to thinning.
(b). YES______ NO __X___ In special treatment Riparian Zones identified by district biologist (category 2, 3 and 4 streams and wetted draws): no thinning within 75 feet of waters edge.

Existing Stocking: 3080 T/A Density Category: Heavy
Current Species Composition: WL-267,DF-283,WP-350,GF-1650,WH-533.
· TPA by species to be retained:WL-200,WP-350,DF-75,GF-150,WH-100.
· Species Preference: WL,WP,GF,WH,DF.
· Maximum tree diameter at dbh to cut: 6 "+
· Maximum stump height: 8”
Existing condition: Stand has 350 WP/ac of which 23% are dead or lethal, 3% prunable, safe 2% with 72% clean, leaving 269 WP/ac prunable.
· Minimum tree height to 8 ft.
· No. of trees to be pruned per acre: 250-300 /ac
· No. of trees white pine ignored: est. 0 /ac
