Silvicultural Goal and Desired Condition

Current Crop Trees:

· 200 trees per acre. Western Larch and Western Whitepine.

Well spaced even aged conifer stand with the following characteristics:

· Clear and open area, free of brush, around each preferred tree species

· Primarily root rot resistant species

· Maintained in a vigorous condition with limited insect and disease concerns.

End Result- (specifics)

· Brush- free preferred species dominating the stand composition

Brush Competition Removal

· Brush competition removal of 5 foot radius around all preferred species.

· The average spacing for preferred tree species is 10 x 10 ft.

· Slash will be pulled back outside of the 5 foot radius and cut into 3 foot lengths.

· Only cut brush around trees listed in the Species Preference section.

· Cut all Douglas Fir, Grand Fir, Lodgepole Pine, Englemann Spruce, Western Hemlock and SubAlpine Fir that interfere with the growth of a preferred species.

· Brush that cannot be removed by hand, due to its large size, will be pruned up to 4 feet from the ground.

· The spacing may be varied 50 % to select the preferred tree based on the prescription and characteristics of desirable trees.

Desirable Leave Tree Characteristics. Trees should have the following characteristics:

· Straight stem

· Small branch diameter

· Good coloration

· Well-formed crown

· Free or limited presence of insect/disease damage and/or symptoms; damage or symptom does not affect growth or survival Undesirable Leave Tree Characteristics. Trees that should not be left as leave trees:

· Multiple tops

· Poor crown form

· Crook or sweep in bole

· Dead or broken tops

· Presence of insects or disease

· Physical or mechanical damage

· Sucker limbs

Acceptable Stocking Densities

· Retain the current crop trees per acre, if possible.

SPECIES PREFERENCE:

· Western Larch and White Pine

· Do not brush around any trees that do not fall within the preference listed below

· DO NOT CUT ANY WESTERN RED CEDAR
