General Specifications
SECTION 200010 - GENERAL MECHANICAL REQUIREMENTS
PART 1 - GENERAL
A. Summary
1. Section includes:
a. General Mechanical Requirements contained in all of the Division 21, 22, 23 & 25 Sections in addition to Division 1 General Requirements.
b. Furnishing and installing of first-class working systems, tested and ready for operation complete with labor, materials, apparatus, transportation, tools, equipment and accessories required for the installation in conformity with the Drawings, the Specifications and other Contract Documents, incorporating the finest standards of workmanship. All materials shall be new and of the highest quality and all labor shall be performed by skilled mechanics under the direction of a competent on-site Superintendent.
2. Related Sections: Including all applicable provisions of the Proposal Form, Instructions to Bidders, General Conditions, Special and/or Supplementary Conditions and Alternates.

C. Definitions
1. "Furnish" or "provide" - to furnish, erect, install and connect up complete and ready for regular operation, particular work referred to, unless specifically indicated or specified otherwise.
2. "Work" - all labor, materials, equipment, apparatus, controls, accessories and other items necessary or required to provide a complete installation.
3. "Piping" - Pipe and Fittings, flanges, valves, controls, hangers, traps, drains, insulation and items necessary or required in connection with or relating to such piping to provide a complete installation.
4. "Concealed" - Embedded in masonry or other construction, installed behind wall furring, within double partitions or hung ceiling, in trenches, tunnels or crawl spaces.
5. "Exposed" - Not installed underground or "Concealed" as defined above.
6. "Indicated" or "Shown" - as indicated or shown on Drawings.
7. "Noted" - as indicated on Drawings and/or specified.
8. "Contract" or "this Contract" shall consist of all documents listed in the Contact Agreement and any and all Supplemental Agreements, data or drawings which could reasonable be required and referred to collectively as the "Contract Drawings."
9. "Contractor" shall mean the person, firm or corporation to whom the contract is awarded by the Owner and who is subject to the terms of these Specifications.
10. Whenever the words "As shown" or "indicated" are used in the description of any part of the work, it shall be understood to mean as shown on the Contract Drawings, unless another meaning is plainly indicated or noted.
D. Submittals
1. Shop Drawings:
a. Prior to delivery of any material to the job site, submit eight (8) copies of the Shop Drawing submittals for review of the Architect/Engineer. Submittals shall clearly display detailed photos, drawings, schematics, specifications, etc. of the material and equipment to be furnished to the job site. Submittals shall be properly labeled with equipment tag number identification from drawing schedule sheets and, also, indicating specific service for which equipment will be used.
Shop drawings, brochures, or catalog cuts showing more than one size or model shall be marked to indicate the size or model proposed for the particular application. Data of a general nature will not be accepted.
b. The HVAC, plumbing, and fire protection drawings are diagrammatic and intended to convey the design intent. They are not to be scaled for exact placement of equipment, piping, and ductwork. Once equipment submittals are approved, Contractor is responsible to field verify all final equipment, ductwork and piping locations to provide all required working clearances, required access for maintenance, and to avoid conflicts during installation. Notify engineer of any conflicts prior to installation.
c. Engineer will review Contractor's shop drawings and related submittals with respect to the ability of the equipment and related work, when complete, to be a properly functioning integral element of the overall system designed by the Engineer. Before submitting a shop drawing or any related material to the Engineer, Contractor shall:
1. Review each such submission for conformance with the means, methods, techniques and sequences of construction and safety precautions and programs incidental thereto, all of which are the sole responsibility of Contractor
2. Approve each such submission and so stamp and date it before submitting it. Engineer shall assume that no shop drawing or related submittal comprises a variation unless Contractor advises Engineer otherwise via a written narrative which is acknowledged by Engineer in writing.
3. Engineer shall return shop drawings and related materials with comments provided that each submission has been called for and is stamped by Contractor as indicated above. Engineer shall return without comment material not called for or which has not been approved by Contractor. Drawings that are not checked by the Contractor will be returned without review for re-submittal.
d. Required submittals for this project are itemized on Table 15010-1 at the end of this section.
2. Contract Closeout Submittals:
a. Operating Instructions: The Mechanical Contractor shall carefully inform and instruct the Owner during the installation and commissioning of the equipment for such a length of time as may be necessary to thoroughly familiarize him with the proper care, operation and maintenance of the equipment.
b. Operating and Maintenance Manuals: Four (4) sets of Operating and Maintenance Manuals shall be furnished to the Owner upon completion of the project. Each set is to include the following:
1. Manufacturer's parts list identified with the make, model, and serial number of the equipment furnished.
2. Schematic control, flow and wiring diagrams identifying the location and function of all system components, valves and controls.
3. Installation, operation, lubrication and maintenance instructions.
4. Manufacturer's recommended spare parts list.
5. Test data and performance curves where applicable.
Manuals shall incorporate design basis, drawings, flow diagrams, brochures and operating instructions in sufficient detail to enable operators to understand the equipment or system, its potentialities, limitations and maintenance needs. Data on design, construction, installation and operating features required by regulations of state or local governing agencies shall be included.
c. As-Built Drawings: At completion of this project, Contractor shall provide one set of RED LINED drawings showing all work installed by him. These Drawings shall incorporate all changes made in the course of the project so as to enable the Owner to properly maintain, operate and repair both exposed and concealed work. Only the Contractor's authorized representative, Field Engineer or Project Superintendent shall record changes on these drawings and each change shall be initialed and dated. At the conclusion of the job, this set of drawings shall be submitted to the Owner as record of actual installation.
E. Quality Assurance
1. Qualifications:
a. This contractor shall examine and consult the Drawings and Specifications of the other trades to better familiarize himself with the character of the project and include in his bid all work of his own trade shown or reasonably inferred.
b. This Contractor shall be thoroughly familiar with all specified products relating to his work and shall submit written objections at least 14 days prior to bid if he objects to the proposed use of any product.
c. Should any obstacles prevent the installation of the piping, ductwork, fixtures or equipment at the points shown on the Drawings, the necessary deviations there from, as determined by the Architect/Engineer, will be permitted and shall be made without additional cost to the Owner. This Contractor shall work with the other contractors and arrange his work so as not to interfere with the work of other contractors.
d. The HVAC, plumbing, and fire protection drawings are diagrammatic and intended to convey the design intent with no attempt made to show every ell, tee, fitting, etc. They are not to be scaled for exact placement of equipment, piping, and ductwork. All ducts and pipes shall be run in spaces indicated as job conditions warrant, arranged for most convenient access for servicing, with due consideration given to other contractor's work. Once equipment submittals are approved, Contractor is responsible to field verify all final equipment, ductwork and piping locations to provide all required working clearances, required access for maintenance, and to avoid conflicts during installation. Notify engineer of any conflicts prior to installation.
e. Contractor shall maintain on site a current set of Mechanical As-built Drawings (a.k.a. RED-LINED set of prints) and Specifications to be used to indicate up-to-date As-built conditions.
F. Alternates:
1. Mandatory alternates for owner evaluation and consideration are required and are as follows:
Alt. 1: Computerized BEMS System according to section 230900 shall be an
ADD alternate to the Base Bid.
2. Voluntary alternates submitted during the bidding period and not listed above shall be considered if submitted in writing to Comprehensive Engineering more than 10 days before bids are due. The "Substitution Request" form shall be used and fully completed.
It shall be sent through the General Contractor or Construction Manager as appropriate.
a. Substitutions - Voluntary alternate changes to the base bid contract initiated by the contractor or their equipment suppliers after the 10 day pre-bid period indicated in paragraph B. 2 above will be evaluated by Comprehensive Engineering on an hourly fee basis. The contractor requesting the change agrees to pay for the evaluation of all design professions involved using the design professionals published rate schedules. The contractor shall complete the "Substitution Request" form attached as appendix "M-1". Also included shall be the manufacturer’s literature with performance data for use by Comprehensive Engineering's evaluation.
b. Mechanical Contractor shall submit a copy of his shop drawings to the Electrical Contractor for coordination of any equipment furnished by the Mechanical Contractor that requires work by the Electrical Contractor. Mechanical Contractor shall be responsible for the cost of any changes in the Electrical Contractors work due to the Mechanical Contractors selection of a different manufacturer other than the one listed on the Mechanical Drawings in the Equipment Schedule.
c. Mechanical Contractor shall submit a copy of his shop drawings to the Steel and / or Masonry Contractor (whichever applies) for coordination of any equipment furnished by the Mechanical Contractor that requires work by the Steel and / or Masonry Contractor. Mechanical Contractor shall be responsible for the cost of any changes in the Steel and / or Masonry Contractors work due to the
Mechanical Contractors selection of a different manufacturer other than the one listed on the Mechanical Drawings in the Equipment Schedule.
G. Project / Site Conditions
1. Existing Conditions:
a. Before submitting Proposals for his work, each Bidder will be held to have examined the premises and satisfied himself as to the existing conditions under which he will be obliged to operate or what will in any way effect the work under this Contract. No allowance will be made subsequently in this connection in behalf of this Contractor for an error or negligence on his part.
b. Work in existing building must be scheduled during times when the building is occupied. All systems serving the existing building(s) must be kept operative at all times.
c. All fixtures, equipment, piping, etc. that are removed and not indicated "to be relocated" are to become property of the Contractor and shall be removed from the building site.
d. Piping exposed by the removal of walls and not required to maintain an operating system shall be removed.
e. This Contractor shall ascertain from his examination of the Architectural and Structural Drawings whether any special temporary openings in the building for the admission of apparatus furnished under this Contract will be necessary and he shall notify the Architect/Engineer accordingly. He shall pay the cost of making such openings in the case of failure to give this notification in sufficient time for the Architect/Engineer to arrange for same during construction.
H. Warranty
1. General: This Contractor shall comply with all requirements of the guarantees as specified in Division 1.
2. Equipment Performance: This guarantee shall be extended to include capacity and integrated performance of component parts of various systems in strict accordance with the true intent and purpose of these Specifications. The Mechanical Contractor shall conduct such tests, at his expense, as herein specified or as may be required by the Architect/Engineer to demonstrate capacity and performance capability of various systems to maintain specified conditions.
3. Factory Warranty: The entire Mechanical System, including all equipment, shall carry a one (1) year Factory Warranty from date of substantial completion, regardless of start-up date of equipment.
PART 2 - PRODUCTS
A. Manufacturers
1. Certain Manufacturers named within these specifications have been selected for the specific purpose of describing the type, quality, performance and design of the equipment required. Only the manufacturer’s names on the drawings or on the specifications may be used in preparing the Base Bid.
2. If it is desired to use manufacturers other than those listed, or specifically requested as alternates, the Contractor may request permission in writing at least 14 days prior to bid opening. Request shall include complete descriptive and performance data as it may apply to the specific application.
3. If alternate or substitute manufacturers are accepted as part of the Bid, the Contractor shall thoroughly examine all dimensional and installation variations to assure a successful installation as originally intended. All changes, revisions, and modifications required due to such substitutions shall be the full responsibility of this Contractor and shall be made at no cost to the Owner.
B. Equipment
1. Equipment Guards: All rotating equipment including couplings, flywheels, gear trains and belt drive shall be provided with adequate guards for personnel protection and compliance with OSHA stipulations. Wherever possible the guards shall be provided by the equipment manufacturer. The guards shall be supported to prevent vibration or interference with the rotating equipment and be readily capable of removal and reinstallation with tools normally available to local craftsmen.
C. Source Quality Control
1. Inspections:
a. General: Work is to be executed and inspected in accordance with local and state codes, laws, ordinances, rules and regulations applicable to particular class of work and any fees in connection therewith are to be paid by the Mechanical Contractor.
b. Conflicts: Should any part of Drawings or Specifications be found to be in conflict with applicable codes or ordinances, the Mechanical Contractor shall notify the Architect/Engineer in writing, at least 14 days prior to receiving bids. After receiving bids, the Mechanical Contractor will be required to complete all work necessary to meet requirements of all codes and ordinances without additional expense to the Owner or his representative.
c. Pressure Vessels: All heating and pressure vessels, including hot water storage containers, shall be constructed in compliance with and installed in accordance with rules and regulations of the Bureau of Construction Codes, Boiler Division - Michigan Department of Consumer and Industry Services. Installations shall be inspected and approved by this Bureau before they are placed in service. This shall include obtaining the permit.
PART 3 - EXECUTION
A. Preparation
1. Protection:
a. All work, fixtures, equipment and materials shall be protected at all times. The Contractor shall make good all damage caused, whether directly or indirectly, by his workmen. All pipe and duct openings shall be closed with caps and plugs during installation. All fixtures and equipment shall be tightly covered and protected against dirt, water, chemical or mechanical injury.
2. Surface Preparation:
a. Unless otherwise required or specified, cutting and patching will be performed by the General Contractor. Each trade shall furnish sketches showing locations and sizes of all openings, chases, etc. required for installation of his work. The Mechanical Contractor shall be responsible for the cost of cutting and patching required for his work.
b. Each Contractor shall furnish and locate sleeves and inserts required before floors and walls are built, or shall be responsible for the cost of cutting and patching required when sleeves and inserts are not installed or where incorrectly located. Each Contractor shall do all drilling required for installation of his hangers.
c. All exposed piping and ductwork shall be completely installed and ready for painting by the General Contractor. Any incorrect and added work installed by the Mechanical Contractor after the General Contractor has painted the areas shall be painted at the cost of the Mechanical Contractor.
d. The Mechanical Contractor shall be responsible for coring 8 inch diameter and smaller openings in ceilings, floors and walls so as to enable pipe routing. The General Trades Contractor shall be responsible for cutting and patching all ceiling, floor and wall openings for all duct passages and for all pipe passages larger than 8" diameter.
B. Field Quality Control
1. Inspections:
a. All welding, brazing, soldering and cutting work shall conform to applicable provisions of the following codes and requirements:
1) ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code
2) American National Standards (ANSI) B31.1 Power Piping & Addenda
3) American Welding Society (AWS) D1.1 Structural Welding Code
b. Welding shall be performed only by qualified welders. Welders and welding procedures employed on pressure vessel or pressure piping work shall be qualified in accordance with Section IX of the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code or with local codes where they take precedence. A record shall be maintained on the job showing the date and results of qualification test for each welder employed on the job.
C. Cleaning and Painting
1. This Contractor shall be responsible for keeping the premises free of all shipping cartons, crates, material scrap, pipe cuttings, etc. related to his work. Floors shall protected with leak-proof pans where pipe cutting or threading operations are in progress.
2. Prime coated equipment, insulation, piping and pipe covering shall be left cleaned and dust-free where painting is not required. Thorough cleaning shall be done where painting is required.
3. All ferrous fabrications furnished by the Contractor shall be given at least one (1) coat of paint before shipment. All welds, cuts, fasteners and other bare ferrous metal items shall be given one (1) coat of primer and one (1) finish coat of enamel paint as applicable, unless indicated otherwise. All scratches, gouges, and bare spots on equipment and accessories shall be touched-up with paint to match the manufacturer's or shop paint colors. All surfaces shall be thoroughly cleaned of rust, scale and dirt before painting.
4. Factory-Finished painted equipment shall be washed with mild soap and water and left in first class condition, entirely free of stains or streaks. Abrasive materials shall not be used.
5. Plumbing fixtures shall be cleaned with mild soap and water containing a disinfecting agent. Trim handles shall be set at the same angle and all trim shall be polished.
Aerators shall be removed, cleaned and reinstalled. Pop-up wastes shall be cleaned and checked for proper operation.
6. All sumps, pits, trenches, manholes, catch basins, floor drains shall be cleaned and left free of foreign material.
7. At the completion of the project, this Contractor shall remove all tools, materials, scrap, etc. from the site and clean all ducts and equipment installed by him.
D. Schedules
1. Part of the work required by the Contract Documents may require isolation of portions of the mechanical system(s) or shut down of certain plant operations or equipment. The Contractor shall perform the work so as to minimize the number and duration of any interruption of the plant mechanical system(s) and normal operation. All such work shall be coordinated with the Owner before any work is started.
2. The actual shutdown of existing equipment and/or operation of main system valves shall only be performed by the Owner's authorized personnel unless other procedures are arranged.
3. All utility shutdowns and all other work which would prevent the Owner's normal operation activities from taking place shall be scheduled with and approval obtained from the Owner in advance and may be required to be performed on premium time basis.
E. Utility Contact Responsibilities
1. It is the project mechanical contractors’ responsibility to contact the utility company, whether it be for natural gas service, domestic water and/or sewer to coordinate and submit the necessary information (capacities, pressures, etc.) to the utility for the utility to implement the required services to the project. This shall include payment of all charges and fees for the service(s) involved. The contractor is then to inform the owner and the engineer of all equipment and services being provided by the utility for service(s) to the building.
F. Access Panel
1. All mechanical equipment furnished and installed in this contract required to be accessible, either by code or noted on the drawings, shall be installed in accessible locations; or, if installed in an inaccessible location such as above inaccessible (dry wall) ceilings or inside inaccessible (drywall or masonry) walls, shall have an access panel installed. Access panels are generally not shown on the Drawings. Access panels shall be furnished and installed by the General Contractor. This contractor shall provide the quantity, sizes and locations of these required access panels to the General Contractor with their bid. See architectural specifications (Division 8) for additional information.

SECTION 200060 - DEMOLITION
A. Work Included - Provide mechanical demolition for the project as shown on the drawings. All material shall be removed from the site and properly disposed of according to prevailing law.
Bidder company shall make a field visit to the site to familiarize themselves with the work before submitting their bid.

a. Install hangers, supports, supplemental framing, clamps and attachments to support piping properly from building structure and to comply with MSS SP-69.
PART 2 – PRODUCTS
A. Duct Hangers and Supports
1. Supports for ductwork and ductwork connected equipment (e.g. coils, humidifiers, filters, dampers, attenuators) shall be installed in a manner that will not produce excessive deflection, swaying, sagging or vibration in the ductwork or in the building structure either during erection, cleaning, testing or normal operation of the system. Also, ductwork shall not be so restrained as to cause it to buckle between supports or anchors or to prevent movement due to expansion and contraction. Ductwork shall be installed at equipment such that equipment can be disconnected and removed without further supporting the ductwork. Ductwork shall not introduce any strains or distortion to the connected equipment. Ductwork shall be supported separately from equipment unless shown otherwise on drawings.
2. Hangers and supports shall be fabricated, installed complete, in accordance with the latest SMACNA duct construction standards unless noted differently herein. Include all lock nuts, rods, bolts, couplings, swivels, inserts and required accessory items.
3. Inserts shall be by Grinnell or Ductmate Industries and sized to adequately support the ductwork.
4. All hangers, supports, clamps, and angles in contact with the duct work shall be of the same material as the duct. All bolts, nuts, washers, screws and other fasteners shall be cadmium plated, stainless steel or otherwise corrosion resistant.

SECTION 230781 - PACKAGED AIR CONDITIONING UNITS

B. Materials
1. General:
a. The unit shall be specifically designed for outdoor installation, completely assembled on a rigid base for one-piece shipping and rigging; suitable for mounting on a roof curb provided by the same manufacturer.
b. Unit shall be UL and ARI certified.
c. Unit shall be piped, wired, charged and tested by the manufacturer before shipment. Only a minimum of field wiring, piping and duct connection shall be required prior to start-up. Conduit, duct, and gas piping connections are made after setting unit on the curb.
d. Unit shall be covered by a one-year limited parts warranty on the complete unit, a ten-year limited warranty on the gas fired heat exchanger and a five year warranty on the compressors.
2. Refrigeration System:
a. Unit shall include a refrigeration system with
1) Single refrigerant circuit containing hermetic compressor, crankcase heaters, filter-driers, suction line freezestats, high pressure switches, compressor motor protection and Schrader access valves.
2) A direct-expansion, draw-thru indoor coil.
3) Draw-thru condenser coil(s) with a refrigeration system to provide at least 15NF of sub-cooling at design conditions.
4) All coils constructed of copper tubes mechanically expanded in aluminum fins.
3. Unit shall have a SCCR of 5 KAIC
4. Economizer Package:
a. Unit shall be furnished with outdoor and return air dampers that are interlocked and positioned by a fully-modulating, spring-return damper actuator. The maximum leakage rate for the outdoor air intake dampers shall not exceed 2% when dampers are fully closed and operating against a pressure differential of
0.5 IWG. A unit-mounted potentiometer shall be provided to adjust the outdoor and return air dampers. A barometric relief damper shall be provided. During economizer operation, a mixed-air temperature control shall modulate the outdoor and return air damper assembly to prevent the supply air temperature from dropping below 55 degrees F. The outdoor intake opening shall be covered with a rain hood that matches the exterior of the unit. Water eliminator/filters shall be provided. Simultaneous economizer/compressor operation shall be possible.
5. Filters:
a. Unit shall be furnished with 2" thick, pleated type, throwaway filters.
6. Fans:
a. Unit shall include:
1) A single supply-air blower, driven by a belt-drive motor; motors shall have class B insulation, ball bearings and be permanently lubricated, 1750 RPM.
2) Condenser propeller-type fans; the 1100 RPM motor shall have class B insulation, sleeve bearings and be permanently lubricated.
3) A lockout circuit to prevent the compressors from cycling on one of the safety controls.
4) A thermostat to de-energize the compressor when the suction line temperature drops below 26 degrees F.
5) An optional 5- minute timer to prevent the compressors from short-cycling.
7. Accessories:
a. Unit shall include:
1) Provide an integral Phase Monitor system for the AC unit. Phase Monitor shall be factory installed and tested by the AC unit Original Equipment Manufacturer. Phase Monitor shall have two LED indicator lights. A green light shall indicate that a balanced three phase power supply is properly connected. A red LED shall indicate that unit operation has been prevented and that the power circuit is either not balanced, properly connected or that the line to line voltage is not between 180 volts and 633 volts. Phase Monitor shall automatically open the power circuit to each three phase motor in the AC unit when any of the following conditions are detected:
a) Power is lost on one of the three power conductors of the three phase power supply to the unit.
b) Voltage between phases is unbalanced on the three power conductors of the three phase power supply to the unit.
c) Phase sequence between the three power conductors of the three phases power supply to the unit changes from the original sequence."
1. Unit shall be plumbed and levelled.
2. Unit shall be wired according to Electrical Specifications.
3. Thermostat shall be wired and shall be installed with tamper-resistant housing.

SECTION 230800 - AIR DISTRIBUTION SYSTEMS
A. Summary

B. Quality Assurance
1. Regulatory Requirements:
a. All work shall be performed by Contractors with State of Michigan licenses.
b. All work shall conform with the 2012 Michigan Mechanical Code.
c. All fans and equipment provided shall be UL Listed.
2. Qualifications:
a. All air distribution work shall be installed by Sheet Metal Contractor with a minimum of five (5) years of experience on comparable projects and work with competent regularly employed installers.
b. Installation methods shall conform to manufacturer's published recommendations of each material, item and equipment.
c. Comply with latest published SMACNA recommendations for fabrication, construction, details and installation procedures for all equipment.
d. Equipment and installation shall comply with latest published ASHRAE recommendations and standards.
e. All air distribution equipment shall be provided by manufacturers with a minimum of five (5) years of experience in the manufacturing and distribution of products.
C. Submittals
1. Provide required shop drawings of all equipment indicated.
2. Indicate on shop drawings NC levels of all grilles, registers, and diffusers selected.
3. Provide dimensioned shop drawings of all low pressure round ductwork indicated on drawings.
D. Product Delivery, Handling and Storage
1. Contractor shall be responsible for keeping all ducts clean during construction by installing caps on all low wall and floor return or exhaust openings. Before all systems are turned over to owner, ducts shall be thoroughly cleaned by applying full fan capacity to each branch main.
5. Job site duct material storage areas shall be located away from high dust generating processes such as masonry or tile cutters, cutoff saws, drywall sanding, mortar and plaster mixers, roof pitch kettles and main walkways that will be constantly swept. The general contractor (or construction manager) shall designate a suitable area for temporary storage.
6. To prevent ductwork material damage from standing water, storage locations shall include pallets or blocking material to keep fabricated metal ductwork above the floor surface. If there is risk of water runoff from above or dusty work areas cannot be avoided, coverage shall be used to protect stored materials.
E. Job Conditions
1. It is a requirement of this Contract that the Contractor shall cooperate and coordinate elevations and locations of his installation of ceiling ductwork and air diffuser systems with elevations and locations of heating piping, plumbing piping, electrical lighting and conduit systems to be installed by Others, including structural steel, in order to avoid conflict. Further, Contractor shall not proceed with installation until acceptable locations and elevations are established and recorded.
2. Contractor is notified that no added cost will be allowed for relocation of his work to avoid conflict with other Trades or for his failure to coordinate, whether due to his negligence, error, oversight or other cause in establishing satisfactory coordination.
3. Coordinate, prior to fabrication and installation, location of all ductwork and layout of all air system outlets and inlets with Structural, Electrical, Mechanical and Ceiling Contractors for recessed lights, piping, structure, etc.
4. Advise all other trades of the size, shape and location of all required openings for ductwork, fire dampers, grilles, diffusers, exhaust vents, intakes, etc.

B. Definitions
1. Duct Sizes: Inside clear dimensions.
2. Pressure Class - If duct pressure class is not specifcally designated, the basis of compliance with the SMACNA HVAC Duct Construction Standards is as follows: 2" w.g.
for all ducts between the supply fan and variable volume control boxes and 1" w.g. for all other ducts of any application.
C. Quality Assurance
1. Qualifications
a. Construction of ductwork shall conform to the latest edition of the SMACNA “HVAC Duct Construction Standards, Metal and Flexible”.
b. Installation of ductwork shall conform to applicable national building and mechanical codes and the latest edition of NFPA 90A and 90B.
D. Project Conditions
1. Field Measurements
a. It is a requirement of this contract that the Contractor shall cooperate and coordinate elevations and locations of his installation of ductwork with elevations and locations of heating piping, plumbing piping, electrical lighting and conduit systems, including structural steel, in order to avoid conflict. A. Materials
1. Low Pressure Rectangular Ductwork:
a. Ductwork shall be G-60 coated galvanized steel of lockforming grade conforming to ASTM A-653 and A-924 standards. Minimum yield strength for steel sheet and reinforcements is 30,000 psi.
b. For all supply and return ductwork with the longest side 36" wide and over, duct joints shall be constructed using Ductmate Industries Model 35/25 (or approved equal per SMACNA T-22 Flanges Connection Standards) slide-on systems.
Installation shall conform to the latest manufacturer's published duct construction standards. Provide shop drawings of duct joint materials.
c. Provide galvanized steel ductwork and fittings, as indicated on the drawings, of gauges and supported and braced in accordance with the following schedule:

2) Where space necessitates, provide one of the following:
a) Short radius elbows with double-wall turning vanes properly stiffened and positioned and securely fastened

b) Combination short radius with square turn elbows are not allowed.
c) All fittings shall be same gauge as ductwork.
b. Branch Duct Take-offs:

a) 45 tapered square-to-round transition fitting (with gasket and balancing damper) equal to the “High-efficiency Take-off” fitting by Sheet Metal Connectors, Inc., Minneapolis, MN (www.smcduct.com)
b) Bellmouth or Mini-bellmouth fitting (with gasket and balancing damper) equal to Buckley model BM-D or M-BMD (1-800- BUCKLEY) or Sheet Metal Connectors.
Note: Straight-in (i.e. non-tapered) take-off fittings such as “Spin-in", dovetail or flared type take-off fittings are prohibited.

4. Low Pressure Round Duct Fittings:

3) Provide plastic backed duct tape with compatible sealer applied minimum 1" either side of all joints. "Thermofit" duct brand is acceptable in lieu of above.

5. Duct Sealer:
a. All transverse and longitudinal duct joints (except slide-on flange connections such as Ductmate 25 & 35) and duct penetrations for controls and accessories on supply, return and exhaust duct systems shall be sealed with a flexible water-based adhesive duct sealant (Ductmate Proseal, Hardcast DS-321 or other approved equal). Manufacturer's data shall be submitted as shop drawings.
b. Total allowable leakage from the ductwork (after applying sealant) shall not exceed five (5) percent of the total system design airflow rate. Joint sealant shall have fire and smoke hazard rating as tested to NFPA 90A / 90B or U.L. 723 not to exceed: Flame Spread of 25 and Smoke Developed of 50.
c. All ductwork shall be suitably cleaned and prepared and sealant applied in strict accordance with manufacturer's instructions. Sealant shall be applied only after ductwork has been installed (excepting round duct with slip fittings where sealant must be applied before assembly). Manufacturer's recommendations for cure time shall be followed before pressure testing is begun. Any additional paint or coatings must conform to manufacturer's specifications. Where this procedure is not followed, the Engineer will have the right to have all sections removed and resealed at no additional cost to the Owner.
d. On exposed spiral duct, sealant shall be applied to duct surface so that no sealant is exposed on the finish outer surface of the ductwork.
A. Application
1. Fabricate and support in accordance with SMACNA Low Pressure Duct Construction Standards and ASHRAE handbooks, except as indicated. Provide duct material, gauges, reinforcing, and sealing for operating pressures indicated.
2. Size round ducts installed in place of rectangular ducts in accordance with ASHRAE table of equivalent rectangular and round ducts. No variation of duct configuration or sized permitted except by written permission.
3. Construct T's, bends, and elbows with radius of not less than 1-1/2 times width of duct on centerline. Where not possible and where rectangular elbows are used, provide air foil turning vanes. Where acoustical lining is indicated, provide turning vanes of perforated metal with glass fiber insulation.
4. Increase duct sizes gradually, not exceeding 15 degrees divergence wherever possible.
Divergence upstream of equipment shall not exceed 30 degrees; convergence downstream shall not exceed 45 degrees.
5. Provide easements where low pressure ductwork conflicts with piping and structure.
Where easements exceed 10 percent duct area, split into 2 ducts maintaining original duct area.
6. Use crimp joints with or without bead for joining round duct sizes 8 inch and smaller with crimp in direction of air flow.
7. Use double nuts and lock washers on threaded rod supports.
8. Seal all joints, seams and connections in all ducts with non-hardening sealant.
B. Installation
1. Locate ducts with sufficient space around equipment to allow normal operating and maintenance activities.
2. Connect diffusers or troffer boots to low pressure ducts with 4 feet maximum length of flexible duct.
3. During construction provide temporary closures of metal or taped polyethylene on open ductwork to prevent construction dust from entering ductwork system.
4. All joints and seams shall be sealed air tight and all laps shall be made in the direction of air flow.
5. All edges and slips shall be finished smooth inside of ducts.
6. Ends of ducts in rooms shall be turned back on the outside face of the wall or ceiling in a neat and workmanlike manner and left for proper fastening of the grille or register.
7. Ducts passing through masonry walls or ceilings shall have thermal insulation between the duct and the masonry and sealed tight by this contractor.
C. Adjusting and Cleaning
1. Clean duct system and force air at high velocity through duct to remove accumulated dust. To obtain sufficient air, clean half the system at a time. Protect equipment which may be harmed by excessive dirt with temporary filters, or bypass during cleaning.

1. Fabricate in accordance with SMACNA Low Pressure Duct Construction Standards, and as indicated.
2. Provide manual volume control dampers at each supply, or exhaust opening, where indicated or where required for balancing of air distribution.
a. Dampers up to 36" wide and 12" high shall be single blade type with minimum 20 gauge galvanized frame and blade.
b. Dampers over 12" high shall be multiple opposed blade type with minimum 18 gauge frame and 16 gauge blades.
c. Round dampers up to 16" diameter shall be single blade type with minimum 20 gauge frame and 20 gauge blade.
