Ellsworth-Type Reverse Lay
Electro-Mechanical, Single Conductor Cable
Ellsworth type reverse - lay cable is used for supporting sounding weights and current measuring equipment in the process of measuring the volume of water flowing in rivers.
REQUIREMENTS
: Construction and mechanical specifications for the several sizes shall be as follows:
I. HIF Stock Number 2316001: 0.084-inch (2.13mm) cable diameter
CONSTRUCTION
Nominal values Cumulative cable Diameter
Conductor: 7-wire, 0.008” (0.20mm) bright copper, #24 AWG (0.024” / 0.61mm) Insulation Armor: Inner Layer 18 wires, 0.008” (0.20mm) RHL (0.060” / 1.52mm)
: 0.010” propylene copolymer (0.044” / 1.12mm)
Outer Layer 18 wires, 0.012” (0.31mm) LHL (0.084” / 2.13mm)*
(All armor galvanized high strength steel, preformed and prestressed.)
MECHANICAL
Breaking strength: Not less than 500 lbs. (226.8 Kg) Cable outside diameter: 0.084” + 0.004” (2.13mm + 0.10mm)
II. HIF Stock Number 2316002: 0.100 inch (2.54mm) cable diameter
Conductor: 7-wire, 0.008” (0.20mm) bright copper, #24 AWG (0.025” / 0.64mm) Insulation Armor: Inner Layer 12 wires, 0.014” (0.36mm) RHL (0.074” / 1.88mm)
: 0.012” (0.31mm) propylene copolymer (0.046” / 1.17mm)
Outer Layer 18 wires, 0.014” (0.36mm) LHL (0.100” / 2.54mm)*
Breaking strength not less than 900 lbs. (408.3 Kg) Cable outside diameter 0.100” + 0.004” (2.54mm + 0.10mm)
III. HIF Stock Number 2316003: 0.125 inch (3.18mm) cable diameter
Cumulative cable Diameter
Conductor: 7-wire, 0.008” (0.20mm) bright copper, #24 AWG (0.024” / 0.61mm) Insulation Armor: Inner Layer 12 wires, .0175 (0.445mm) RHL (0.091” / 2.31mm)
: 0.018” (0.46mm) propylene copolymer (0.056” / 1.42mm)
Outer Layer 18 wires, .0175 (0.445mm) LHL (0.125” / 3.18mm)*
Breaking strength: Not less than 1500 lbs. (680.4 Kg) Cable outside diameter: .125” + .004 (3.18mm + 0.20mm)
*The difference, between the numerical sum and actual size, is due to the compression of the conductor insulation, after winding the armor layers around it.
WORKMANSHIP
: Workmanship shall be of a quality consistent with existing industry production standards and practices. Any material, which has been treated in a manner to conceal defects therein, shall not be offered to the Government for acceptance.
CONTRACTOR CERTIFICATIONS
: The contractor shall submit certification to the Contracting Officer and Contracting Officer’s representative prior to shipment that all reels contain continuous unspliced lengths of cable and that he has complied with all other requirements of the specification.
PACKAGING: The cable shall be furnished on reels with a flange diameter that will not exceed 48 inches (1.2m). Reels shall be returned for credit as applicable. (See contract schedule). Only one continuous unspliced length of cable shall be placed on each reel. No reel shall contain less than 5,000 feet (1524m). * The exact length will be specified in the purchase order. At least a six (6) inch (152.4mm) portion of both ends of the cable on each reel shall extend outside the reel. Each reel shall be marked in accordance with marking requirements paragraph.
MARKING: Each reel shall have an identification plate or label, (see fig. 1), of a size and shape determined by the contractor and affixed to the flange with the following data:
