SDFO FENCE SUPPLIES 2023

Item 1. Heavy Duty Steel Fence Posts 5-1/2’ (Quantity 4,928 ea)

Heavy Duty Steel Fence Posts 5-1/2’: (Chicago Steel or Equal) Shall be a heavy-duty grade 5-1/2’ steel posts painted green with white, silver, or lime green tops or painted gray with red, white, or silver tops, “T” bar type, with a swaged or riveted anchor plate which does not easily bend or twist when an obstruction is hit during the driving process. Other steel post painted colors may be allowed on a case-by-case basis with the approval of the Contracting Officer (CO). Request shall be submitted in writing to the contracting officer at least one week prior to solicitation closing date. Posts shall be furnished with clip-type fasteners. Punched tabs for fastening wires are not acceptable. Steel posts shall be manufactured from wrought, rail, or new billet steel, and shall weigh a minimum of 1.33 lb/ft exclusive of the anchor plate, which shall weigh a minimum of 0.67 lbs., with a minimum of 18 sq. inches in area. Posts shall meet all ASTM A 702 requirements and must be tagged accordingly. Failure to meet any of these requirements shall result in the rejection of material at the time of inspection.

Item 2. Wood Line Posts TAPERED 5” by 7’ (Quantity 1,232 ea)

Item 3. Wood Cross Member Posts BLUNT 5” by 8’ (Quantity 213 ea)

Item 4. Wood Corner Posts BLUNT 6” by 8’ (Quantity 426 ea)

Wood Line Posts, Cross Members, and Corner Posts shall be sound single stem members. A slight bend in one plane is acceptable. Posts are not acceptable if a straight line drawn from the geometric center of the top to the geometric center of the butt of the post falls outside of the body of the post. Posts that are twisted, rotted, excessively bent or have checks greater than 1/2 their thickness are considered unsound and are not acceptable. Wood Line Posts, Cross Members, and Corner Posts may be full stem members, sawed members or square cross-section, or split members.

1. Minimum diameter for full stem line posts and cross members shall be 5’ at the small end, and 6’ for other posts. Single wood line posts shall be 5” by 7’, brace line posts 6” by 8’, and brace rails 5” by 8’. Minimum cross-sectional area at the small end for split members shall be 10 sq. inches for line posts and cross members, and 20 sq. inches for corner posts. Slabs and wedge-shaped members will not be acceptable.

2. The following species will be acceptable if treated for the full length: Ponderosa pine, Lodgepole pine, and Douglas-fir. Split Western Redcedar posts will be acceptable if the butt is treated for 3’ 6”. The following species will be acceptable without treatment: Honey Locust, Juniper, Osage Orange, and White Oak.

WOOD TREATMENT PRACTICES:

A. General: The following treatments may be used. Minimum net retentions and penetrations shall be according to AWPA U1. Treatment method shall be according to AWPA T1, except as otherwise noted.

B. Pentachlorophenol Method: Five percent pentachlorophenol solution conforming to AWPA P35, Type A.

C. Chromated Copper Arsenic: Waterborne preservative conforming to AWPA P23, Type C.

D. Butt-End Treatment for Split Western Redcedar Only: When split western redcedar posts are used with treatment on butt only, treatment may be by either the cold soaking or hot bath process. Either pentachlorophenol or Creosote (Coal tar) solution may be used. Minimum net retention of preservative shall be 20 lb/ft3 for creosote solutions and 1 lb/ft3 for pentachlorophenol.

Item 5. Heavy Duty Barbed Wire (Quantity 187 rolls)

Heavy Duty Barbed Wire: (Redbrand or Equal) Two 12-1/2 ga. galvanized wires twisted together with 2-point barbs of 14 ga. wire spaced 4”- 6” apart. Wire and barbs shall be zinc-coated steel, with a zinc coating of at least 0.28 oz/ft2 of coated surface area and a minimum breaking strength of 950 lb-force. The barbed wire shall be a heavy-duty wire conforming to ASTM A121 requirements. Failure to meet any of these requirements shall result in the rejection of the material at the time of inspection.

Item 6. Heavy Duty Barbless Wire (Quantity 62 rolls)

Heavy Duty Barbless Wire: (Redbrand or Equal) Two 12-1/2 ga. galvanized wires twisted together. Wire shall be zinc-coated steel wire of at least 0.28 oz/ft2 of coated surface area and a minimum breaking strength of 950 lb-force. The wire shall be heavy duty with a high tensile strength, low stretch, tight braiding per rod, conform to all ASTM A641 requirements and must be tagged accordingly. Failure to meet any of these requirements shall result in the rejection of the material at the time of inspection.
