Salient Characteristics Description of Need:

· This proposal is for the replacement of two large format scanners for use by the National Geological Map Data Base (NGMDB) and to support additional work with the US Geological Survey Library.

· The NGMDB is an online database that serves up raster images of geological maps from a multitude of sources within the United States. The maps are scanned and georeferenced and then categorized by what thematic properties the maps contain. It is an ongoing effort in collaboration with the USGS library to digitize their holdings, and to add those images to the NGMDB.

· The NGMDB and USGS Library has identified the need for a 60 inch scanner and a 42 inch scanner for high resolution scans of historic and current maps to be incorporated into the database.

· The existing scanners are 8 years old, are out of maintenance, and spare parts are not longer made for them, and have become obsolete.

· The scanners are the fundamental base of the entire NGMDB mission as the vast majority of the maps being processed are from the pre-digitized age before 2010. Historic geologic maps are extremely accurate and contain valuable scientific data that is necessary for the mission of many centers within the USGS and other agencies.

Specifications/Salient Characteristics:

Notes:

· As mentioned above, there is a need for a 60 inch scanner and a 42 inch scanner.

· The project chief for NGMDB and USGS Librarians have identified Contex HD scanners are the best fit for the USGS needs. Staff Scientists and GIS personnel are already trained on the use of the scanner, it’s enhancement software, and are knowledgeable about in house maintenance duties that they can perform on the scanner to keep it in warranty.

· Scanner needs to have RGB color interpretation, 1200 optical dpi, and a maximum resolution of at least 9000dpi

· Scanner will attach to computer by either USB3.0 or USB3.1

· Scanner speed will exceed 15 inch per second scanning speed
