1.0 INTRODUCTION
1.1 Facility Location
Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area Visitor Center, 3205 State Highway 159, Las Vegas, Nevada 89161 (Exhibit 1).
The Visitor Center restroom facilities, janitors room and soil pipe are shown on Exhibit 2 – lat: 36.1354° / long: -115.4278.
1.2 Background
The Visitor Center (VC) janitors room contains a 3-inch diameter floor drain surrounded by a wash area floor pan with 4 to 6-inch raised border (Exhibit 3). A drain conveys closet rinse/wash water to a soil pipe that connects to the women’s restroom main sewer line. The drain is typically used by janitorial services each day, throughout the day.
Frequently, water drains so slowly that it ponds in the floor pan and backs into an equipment room adjacent to the janitors room. Camera inspections of the soil pipe show that a segment below the women’s restroom floor (prior to the main sewer line) is damaged or blocked (Exhibit 4).
The women’s restroom floor is composed of a tile surface underlain by 5-inch-thick reinforced concrete over 4-inches of base course and a vapor/moisture barrier. Design details are shown on Exhibits 5 thru
7. Specifications for slab on grade concrete, base course and compaction effort are provided in Appendix B.
2.0 SCOPE OF WORK
The purpose of this project is to repair the damaged pipe section or remove the blockage so the pipes design capacity is reinstated. This project calls the following actions to be taken:
1) Remove section of restroom floor tile and concrete;
2) Identify extent of damaged pipe section;
3) Remove and replace damaged pipe section;
4) Test pipe repair;
5) Reinstall and compact pipe backfill material;
6) Repair concrete floor to condition prior to pipe repair; and
7) Repair floor tile to condition prior to pipe repair.

Fill Placement and Compaction
After performing required excavations, the exposed soils should be carefully observed to verify removal of all unsuitable deposits. Exposed soils should then be scarified to a depth of 6 inches moisture conditioned as necessary, and compacted as recommended.
Fill materials should be placed on a horizontal plane, in loose lifts not over 8 inches in thickness, unless otherwise accepted by the geotechnical engineer.
Materials should be compacted to the following:
MATERIAL PERCENT DENSITY
(ASTM D1557) MOISTURE CONTENT
Granular 95 minimum -2 to +2 percentage points of optimum
Note:
1 All fill placed deeper than 5 feet below final grade should be compacted to a minimum of 95 percent.
Where the clay soils are present within 3 feet of final grade, tests should be performed to determine the expansion potential of the soil as soon as practical during grading. These tests should be performed on representative samples to determine the expansion potential from oven-dried moisture content to approximately saturated moisture content. A 60 psf surcharge load should be applied during the test.
Field density tests should be taken for approximately each 1½ feet in elevation gain after compaction, but not to exceed 2 feet in vertical height between tests. Field density tests may have to be taken at intervals of 6 inches in elevation gain, if required by the Engineer. The locations of the tests in the plan should be spaced to give the best possible coverage; however, the tests should be taken no farther apart than 75 feet. The Engineer may take additional tests as considered necessary to check on the uniformity of compaction. In areas, where sheep’s foot rollers are used, the tests should be taken in the compacted material below the disturbed surface. No additional layers of fill should be spread until the field density tests indicate that the specified density has been obtained.
Mojave Discovery Center Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area Terracon Project No. 64095021 August 19, 2009
No landscaping or irrigation should be allowed within 5 feet of the structures.
Positive drainage of 2 percent minimum should be maintained away from structures, adjoining concrete slabs and block walls at a distance of at least 10 feet, where feasible.
Landscaping irrigation should be kept to a minimum.
Any planter areas adjacent to the structures should be sealed.
Floor Slabs
If grading recommendations are complied with, concrete floor slabs may be supported on a 4-inch thick layer of Type II material. The use of a vapor retarder should be considered beneath concrete slabs-on-grade that will be covered with wood, tile, carpet or other moisture sensitive or impervious coverings, or when the slab will support equipment sensitive to moisture. When conditions warrant the use of a vapor retarder, the slab designer and slab contractor should refer to ACI 302 for procedures and cautions regarding the use and placement of a vapor retarder.
Recommendations presented by the American Concrete Institute for slabs-on-grade construction should be complied with for all concrete placements and curing operations.
Improper curing techniques and/or excessive slump (water-cement ratio) could cause excessive drying/shrinkage resulting in random cracking and/or slab curling. Concrete slabs should be allowed to cure adequately before placing vinyl or other moisture sensitive floor coverings.
Corrosivity
Based on laboratory testing completed by Atlas Chemical Testing Laboratories, Inc., the on-site soils have a negligible to moderate classification for sulfate exposure, according to Table 4.2.1 of the American Concrete Institute (ACI) 318, Section 4.2.
However, based on our experience with soils in the general area of the project site, a potential exists for severe sulfate-content soils to be present at the site.
Therefore, we recommend that cement Type V, along with a water-cement ratio of 0.45, and minimum compressive strength of 4500 psi be incorporated into the concrete mix design for this project in order to reduce sulfate attack as recommended in the ACI. Consideration should be given to providing protection to buried metal pipes or use of non-metallic pipes, where permitted by local building codes.
