Brand Name Justification:

1:8:11 recommend that NASA, NASA Shared Services Center negotiate with only with vendors who can provide the subject band name from Dell for PowerEdge R740 Servers. The total estimated cost ofthis effort is- and the estimated period of performance or lead-time for delivery is-

This recommendation is for the acquisition of supplies or services determined to be reasonably available from only one source/only one manufacture. Competition is impractical for the following reasons (please answer the questions below):

1. What are the reasons for soliciting only the suggested source/suggested brand name? Please provide the unique characteristics of the items or services along with the supporting rationale and the market research performed to substantiate your reason for the suggested source/brand name.

NASA Langley's Central Storage System (CSS) is built on IBM's High Performance

Storage System and runs in a complex environment with very precise requirements to manage over 6 petabytes of NASA data spanning over 20 years. The Dell platform and specific configurations being proposed have been certified by IBM HPSS engineering for use at NASA Langley as part of their IBM HPSS storage solution. This hardware is being purchased to supplement existing proven Dell hardware that was previously justified and accepted by NASA. It follows proven Dell configurations at other major IBM HPSS storage sites around the world, such as the National Center for Supercomputing

Applications (NCSA), NOAA, and the United Kingdom Met Office (UKMO).

2. What is the impact to the govemment if another vendor/brand is used? Include any dollar, schedule, or compatibility impacts if possible.

Dell brands were chosen to support already existing Dell hardware currently in use. If this brand was not chosen it would lead to compatibility issues that will result in a work stopping and therefore end up costing more than the original purchase of these items.

Not only will procuring these brands save time but also money.
