Advanced Air Transport Technology (AATT) Cylinders

NASA LaRC is hereby soliciting offers to procure aluminum, blade-stiffened cylinders to conduct joining and materials research. Vendor shall provide a proposal that includes a description of the process that will be used to fabricate cylinders, fabrication schedule, and price. The Vendor shall permit on-site inspection during and/or after fabrication by a Government representative.

The cylinders shall have the following attributes:

1. The cylinders shall be fabricated from 6061 aluminum.

2. The cylinders shall be seamless (no longitudinal welds, or joints).

3. The blade stiffeners shall be formed concurrent with shaping the cylinder (no machining).

4. The useable length of the cylinders shall have uniform, as-formed dimensions that are nominally:

• Interior Diameter = 120 in.

• Wall thickness = maximum 0.20 in.

• Stiffener height = minimum 0.40 in.

• Stiffener width = 0.1 – 0.4 in

• Stiffener spacing = 2.0 – 8.0 in.

5. The cylinders shall yield a minimum of 20 ft. (240 in.) of full-height blade-stiffened length, exclusive of grip ends and/or runout regions. This may be accomplished with multiple cylinders.

A maximum of four (4) cylinders are acceptable to meet this requirement.

6. The cylinders shall be heat treated to T6 temper per AMS 2770.

7. The cylinders shall be inspected for quality to ensure they are suitable for joining together to form a 20-foot long cylinder with the following minimum acceptability requirements:

• retaining geometric tolerances of circularity less than or equal to 0.090 inch and concentricity less than or equal to 0.030 inch to enable joining cylinders end-to-end

• no surface cracks or through-thickness defects are evident based on visual inspection

Deliverables:

1. Vendor shall deliver aluminum 6061-T6 cylinders in conformance with the specifications above.

2. Vendor shall provide an inspection report that includes material certification, dimensions of the fabricated cylinders, and a quality inspection report.
