Lander Technologies Oxygen Liquefaction Cryogenic Cooler and Fan Specification
May 8, 2019 Rev 6 SCOPE of SUPPLY The scope of this procurement covers an integrated refrigeration system capable of providing a variable cryogenic cooling output via an indirect coolant gas supply loop. There are two applications for which the integrated refrigeration system will be used. The first application is an oxygen liquefaction application where the integrated refrigeration system will be used to liquefy oxygen gas within a tank. The integrated refrigeration system will move a working fluid (neon) through a cooling loop with one end of the cooling loop having the cold head and compressor/fan/blower and the other end being provided by NASA, a tubing heat exchanger attached to a storage tank (i.e. the indirect oxygen liquefaction application). The nominal operating pressure of the cooling loop is 100 psia and it has approximately a 0.5 psi pressure drop at the nominal flow rate of 16 g/s. The minimum design pressure for the system is 430 psig to account for isochoric heating of the process fluid from 90K to 300K. The integrated refrigeration system will connect to the NASA heat exchanger via bayonet fittings (both sides to be provided by the vendor). The second application is liquefaction of methane. The integrated refrigeration system is much less defined for this operation and can be indirect liquefaction (like the oxygen liquefaction application) or the methane gas can be provided directly to the cold head for liquefaction directly onto the cold head (direct liquefaction). In this application, the gaseous methane will be regulated down from storage bottles to between 100 and 300 psia to feed into the integrated refrigeration system. All process fluid piping shall be designed, fabricated, examined, inspected and tested in accordance the latest revision of ASME B31.3 Process Piping Code for normal fluid service and NASA NPD 8710.5, Policy for Pressure Vessels and Pressurized Systems. ASME code stamped safety relief devices shall be set, sized, and provided as required to protect the pressure systems and vessel from all credible failure scenarios as required in accordance with ASME Section VIII, Division 1 Boiler and Pressure Vessel B&PV code, ASME B31.3 code, CGA S-1.3 PRESSURE RELIEF DEVICE STANDARDS and API Recommended Practices 520 Sizing, Selection, and Installation of Pressure-Relieving Devices in Refineries and 521 Guide for Pressure Relief and Depressuring Systems.
Definition section:
Direct Liquefaction: The process fluid (methane) is in direct contact with the cold head changing the process fluid phase from gas to liquid.
Indirect Liquefaction: An intermediate working fluid (neon or helium) transports the energy from the process fluid to the cold head, changing the process fluid phase from gas to liquid.
Net pressure Gain: The allowable pressure drop across the rest of the working fluid transport loop.
