PURCHASE DESCRIPTION
1. Statement of Need and Purpose: A video-based home cage activity measurement system is required to noninvasively collect data as part of newly launched collaborative NIA IRP/ERP Longitudinal Rat Resource initiative. The acquired data will be available for investigators in both the intra and extramural community for subsequent analysis with measures of cognitive resilience.
2. Background Information and Objective: A collaborative NIA IRP/ERP Longitudinal Rat Resource initiative has been funded to provide investigators in both the intra and extramural community data and biological samples from rats at various points across the lifespan. An important aspect of behavioral data to be collected is the rat’s normal activity in their home cage to assess how this change across the lifespan. This data can then be analyzed with other physiological or behavioral data to explore relationships with measures of cognitive resilience to identify targets for interventions to slow down or stop age related cognitive decline.
3. Generic Name of Product: Home cage activity measurement system.
4. Purchase Description: IVC RackScan System for Rat with 16 cages. Clever Sys. Inc.
5. Salient characteristics It is critical that the system: 1) can test 16 rats at the same time, 2) is compatible with the One Cage 2100 micro-isolator cage by Lab Products, 3) is contained in a ventilated rack system, 4) uses video technology and computer algorithms to analyzes the data while it is being collected, 5) uses both infrared and adjustable white light for recording data in both the light and dark, 6) can detect the following behaviors: rearing, come down, walk, hanging/climbing, drink, sniff, dig, eat, grooming, jump, sleep, twitch, and stretch, and 7) has over a 15 year documented history of researchers successfully using the systems video-based algorithms to classify home cage activity.
6. Quantity: One system capable of testing 16 rats at the same time.
7. Delivery Date: 6 months or later as specified from receipt of order.
