PRE-SOLICITATION NON-COMPETITIVE (NOTICE OF INTENT) SYNOPSIS

DESCRIPTION OF REQUIREMENT

The Nuclear Receptor Biology Section (NRBS) work has been focused on studying the effect of thyroid hormone and its receptor on the sensory system.

Using genetically modified animal models, we have demonstrated thyroid hormone has great impact on the hearing function. In addition to histological examination of mouse inner ear, it is important to determine the extent of malfunctioning by measuring the hearing ability of mice to compliment other findings. The investigation includes otoacoustic emission test (OAE) to examine the mechanical transfer of sound waves from middle ear to inner ear and to determine whether there is any structural damage to the inner ear. The auditory-evoked brainstem response (AEP) is used to determine the electric response from the brain when various sounds are presented to the animal.

This purchase is to obtain a hearing testing system which can measure various aspects (AEP and OAE) of hearing ability of mice.
