Background:
The National Institutes of Health (NIH) mission is to seek fundamental knowledge about the nature and behavior of living systems and the application of that knowledge to enhance health, lengthen life, and reduce illness and disability. The National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI) mission has expanded to encompass a broad range of studies aimed at understanding the structure and function of the human genome and its role in health and disease. NHGRI supports the development of resources and technology that will accelerate genome research and its application to human health. A critical part of the NHGRI mission continues to be the study of the ethical, legal and social implications (ELSI) of genome research. NHGRI also supports the training of investigators and the dissemination of genome information to the public and to health professionals.
NHGRI Microarray Core (MAC) was established on 2000. The facility represents a consortium between the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI), the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) and the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) and NHGRI NIH Intramural Sequencing Center (NISC) is a centralized research facility for performing high-throughput, large-scale DNA sequencing and sequence analysis. NISC operates several sequencing platforms in-order to meet the varied needs of the NIH community.
Purpose and Objectives:
NISC procurement of the NextSeq 550 will provide researchers rapid sequencing speed, simpler operation, availability of multiple flow cell types for maximum flexibility, and most importantly, compatibility with existing DNA Sequencer occupying the NIH Intramural Sequencing Center: three (3) MiSeq Sequencers, three (3) HiSeq 2500 Sequencers, one (1) HiSeq 4000 Sequencer, one (1) NovaSeq 6000 Sequencer, one (1) Pacific Biosciences (PacBio) RS II Sequencer, and one (1) Oxford Nanopore GridION Sequencer. The MAC microarray core lab requires the NextSeq 550 sequencer to transition from array-based transcriptomics to sequence-based transcriptomics. The NextSeq 550 sequencer fits perfectly in the core’s mission in providing a multitude of DNA and RNA applications that are not accessible through the microarray platform as well as added capability and the option to run single cell analysis that is not feasible with microarrays.
Procurement:
1. Illumina NextSeq 500 Sequencing System, Catalog Number: Quantity: Three.
2. MiSeq System, Catalog Number: SY-410-1003, Units: One
3. Freight/Handling Fee.
