Computer Hardware Components for Experimental Radar System
09 September 2020
Introduction
The U.S. Naval Research Laboratory’s (NRL’s) Advanced Radar Systems requires computer hardware components to build real-time, back-end signal and data processing systems for an experimental radar. The systems will also be utilized for offline signal processing research and development and other tasks. Two (2) back-end systems will be built—one for use in the field and one for use at NRL. The hardware components include rack computer servers, network switches, peripherals and accessories to support each back-end system.
Background
In 2019, NRL completed the development of a back-end processing system for the Flexible Distributed Array Radar (FlexDAR), an enhanced radar sensor concept for surveillance, communications, and electronic warfare. The FlexDAR back-end system provides monostatic and distributed radar signal processing, inter-radar communications, scheduling, tracking and user interface functions.
The FlexDAR back-end system used 2U Dell PowerEdge R730s rack servers. Each server was configured with two (2) Intel Xeon E5-2698 v3 2.3GHz 16C/32T processors with 64GB of random access memory (RAM), a single 10GbE Network Adapter with four (4) ports, a single 1GbE Network Adapter with four (4) ports, two (2) 1TB 7200RPM Serial Attached Small Computer System Interface (SAS) hard disk drives and dual redundant 1100W power supplies. The 10GbE Network Adapter ports from all the servers were connected to a low latency 48-port 10GbE Dell S4048-ON. The 1GbE Network Adapter ports from all the servers were connected to a low latency Dell S3048-ON for file serving and precision time protocol (PTP). The servers ran on the CentOS 7 operating system and all the NRL-developed code was written in C++ and optimized and compiled for the Xeon processor. All of the hardware components were housed in an American Power Conversion (APC) 44U 19” rack with two (2) APC Rack Power Distribution Units (PDUs) (Model# AP8841) with (36) C13 outputs, an 8kVA APC uninterruptible power supply (UPS) (Model# DLRT8KRMXLT), and a 16-port Tripp-Lite keyboard, video, and mouse (KVM) (Model# B020-U16-19K) for easy switching between servers using on-console push buttons.
NRL now seeks to develop back-end processing systems similar to that of FlexDAR for an experimental radar, however, there are increased requirements due to the need for increased data streaming. System capability will need to be increased through increased number of processors per server and additional server memory. This system needs at least two times (2x) the processor capability and four times (4x) the memory capacity of the existing FlexDAR system due to the increased data stream and processing complexity.
