Text version

A Universal Mechanical Test System is required for static and fatigue composite testing that meets the specifications below: Typical tests to include tensile, short beam shear, flexure and compression. Tests shall be conducted at cryogenic, ambient and elevated temperatures

1. The test frame shall have a load capability of 20 to 30 kN.

2. The test frame shall include load cells to support the test range 300 N up to 25 kN or the frame actuator limit.

3. The test frame actuator mounting shall support testing in a fluid bath.

4. The test frame shall have a power unit that supports static and fatigue testing.

5. The test frame shall include a non‐contact extensometer for composite testing to cover the length range: 5 to 100 mm with a resolution of at least 10 µm.

6. The test frame shall come equipped with an environmental chamber with the following requirements:

a. The test frame shall include an environmental chamber with a temperature range of

‐100°C or lower to + 300°C or higher.

b. The environment chamber shall have windows compatible with the non‐contact extensometer.

c. The environment chamber shall have windows that can accommodate use of camera equipment.

d. The environment chamber shall have a mechanism that allows it to be readily moved out of the test area of the load frame for tests run under ambient environments.

7. The test frame shall include the following mechanical grips:

a. Mechanical grips shall support the test temperature range ‐130°C (or lower) to

300°C (or higher).

b. A set of mechanical grips shall support a load of at least 25 kN.

c. A set of mechanical grips shall support specimens ranging from 0 up to at least 13 mm long.

8. The test frame shall include pneumatic grips with the following specifications:

a. Pneumatic grips shall be capable of exerting constant clamping forces to samples whose thickness may change during testing.

b. The pneumatic grips shall support testing at temperatures ranging from ‐40°C (or lower) up to 200°C (or higher).

c. The pneumatic grips shall be capable of holding samples as small as 5 mm wide and with force of up to 2 kN.

d. The pneumatic grips shall have serrated and rubber faces to hold polymer and composite samples that are as small as 5 mm wide.

9. The test frame shall include hydraulic grips with the following specifications:

a. Hydraulic grips shall be capable of holding samples to loads of up to 25 kN or the frame limit.

b. The hydraulic grips shall support testing in the temperature range ‐40°C or lower up to 150°C or higher.

c. The test frame shall include mounting and control hardware for the hydraulic grips.

10. The test frame shall include wedges compatible with the hydraulic grips which support testing up to at least 20 kN or the frame actuator limit.

a. The wedges of the hydraulic grips shall support test specimens ranging from 0 up to at least 25 mm long.

b. Wedges for the hydraulic grips shall include those with sawtooth and serrated faces.

c. Wedges for the hydraulic grips shall support testing in the temperature range ‐40°C or lower up to 150°C or higher.

11. The test frame shall include extension arms compatible with the environment chamber and hydraulic grips above to support testing to the temperature limits of the hydraulic grips. The extension arms and hydraulic grip combination shall cover the length range of closest approach of the hydraulic grips to the limit of the working height provided by the environment chamber.

12. The test frame shall include 3 & 4‐point flexure fixtures for composites testing with the following specifications:

a. The flexure fixtures shall be capable of supporting specimen spans ranging from 15 mm or lower up to at least 50 mm.

b. The flex fixture shall support testing at temperatures ranging from ‐120°C or lower up to +150°C or higher

13. The test frame shall include an extensometer/displacement gauge compatible with the flexure test fixture.

14. The test frame shall include composite compression testing platens for pressures up to with a dynamic rating of 270 MPa or more and static rating of 600 MPa or more.

a. The compression platens shall support sample diameters up to 50 mm.

b. The compression platens shall be self‐centering.

15. The test frame shall be equipped with hardware and software for data acquisition to support the following types of mechanical testing: tensile, compression, flexure, fatigue.

a. Hardware to include monitor, keyboard and associated peripherals.

b. Computer shall have a minimum of 8 GB RAM

c. Windows 10 or higher Operating system

d. A minimum of 500 GB hard drive storage

16. The test frame shall include supporting software compatible with use of the extensometers and the environmental chamber.

17. The software shall be configured on the test frame control computer hardware.

18. The test frame shall be calibrated upon installation.

19. Onsite installation shall be included.

20. Operator training shall be included.
