Specifications for 8’HTT Mach 6 Nozzle Water Pump Skid
NASA LaRC requires the design, assembly, and delivery of a water pump skid. This skid will be used to support the new water cooled Mach 6 nozzle being built for the 8‐Foot High Temperature Tunnel.
The pump skid(s) shall provide a main pump system consisting of the pump, drive motor, and drive motor controller that will provide a minimum flow 800 gallons per minute of water at a minimum pressure of 800 psig during operation of the new nozzle.
In addition to main pump system, the pump skid(s) shall provide an auxiliary pumping system consisting of the pump or pumps, drive motor(s), and a diesel generator power supply for the drive motors. The purpose of the auxiliary system is to furnish water system back pressure required to start the main pump, as well as a backup cooling water supply providing continuing water flow in the event of a main pump failure. The auxiliary cooling water pump system shall be capable of supplying 400 gallons per minute at 390 psig and shall be independently powered from the main pump.
NASA desires to purchase the two systems described above as a palletized skid that can be fabricated and hydrostatically tested at the contractor’s site prior to delivery to NASA. Delivery of the system is required within 120 days of contract award. The pump piping system design and construction shall be in accordance with ASME B31.3, latest edition. Prior to starting construction of the palletized pump skid system, the contractor shall provide assembly drawings of the process piping and pump skids. The contractor shall provide electrical drawings for the pump motor and motor starter / variable frequency drive system for approval by NASA. NASA will provide a partial payment of 20% of the total due on final approval of the mechanical and electrical drawings.
A schematic drawing of the pump skid is attached to this SOW. This drawing shows the equipment that shall be included on the pump skid(s). The 8‐Foot High Temperature Tunnel’s Mach 6 Nozzle is a highly valuable, water cooled facility component. Because of the high cost of the nozzle, it has been determined that the both the main pump system and the auxiliary pumping system are required to protect the nozzle from excessive temperatures if the main pump stops operating during a tunnel run.
List of equipment to be furnished with the pump skid:
1. Main pump capable of providing a minimum flow of 800 gallons per minute at a minimum pressure of 800 psig.
a. The pump shall be a Gould Model 3393, size 5 x 6 – 11A, 4 stage pump or equivalent pump capable of providing a minimum flow of 800 gallons per minute at 800 psig.
b. The pump shall be supplied coupled to the drive motor with a coupling recommended by the pump manufacturer.
c. The drive motor shall be a 600 horsepower, 460 VAC, 60 Hz., three phase motor. NASA will provide three phase 460 VAC power connections to the pump motor.
d. The motor shall be supplied with the Pumpsmart PS220 motor starter / variable frequency drive or equivalent motor starter / variable speed drive system providing a 600 horsepower minimum motor drive rating, variable speed control capability, motor overload protection, and also provide pump protection against dry run, low‐flow dead head and run out.
e. All equipment shall be designed for installation in an open area with no weather protection.
f. The pump / motor shall be laser aligned and mounted on a pump skid so that NASA can unload the pump skid and install it directly on a concrete pad that NASA prepares for the pump system.
g. The pump / motor shall be furnished with all required guards and shields needed for safe operation of the pumping system.
h. The pump shall have a 5”, 300 lb class, raised face flange for the pump suction line.
i. The pump shall have a 6”, 600 lb class, raised face flange for the pump discharge connection.
j. The pump speed range shall be from 2700 rpm to 3600 rpm.
k. The contractor shall provide baseline vibration data on the pump/motor for condition monitoring of the system in the future.
l. The pump skid and equipment shall be powder coated to minimize rust and deterioration of the skid or the skid components.
m. The pump / pump starter shall be pre‐wired prior to delivery at NASA.
n. Drawings depicting the electrical wiring shall be provided to the
Government.
o. The system shall be delivered such that only the 460 Volt, three phase power connection is required on site to operate the pump / motor starter system.
2. The contractor shall also provide a skid onto which the auxiliary pump system shall be mounted. At the contractors option the auxiliary system can be mounted on the same skid as the main pump system or it can be furnished on a separate pump skid.
a. The auxiliary pumping system shall be capable of providing 400 gallons per minute at 390 psig pressure. The auxiliary pumps system shall be independently powered from the main pump system. The auxiliary system shall be powered by either a diesel driven electrical generator or a diesel engine directly driving the auxiliary pump system.
b. The auxiliary pump system shall be used to build an initial back pressure on the main pump prior to starting the main pump. In addition, any in‐ run loss of the main pump water flow shall immediately terminate a tunnel run while continuing to flow 400 gallons per minute at 400 psig through the auxiliary pump system to cool the tunnel hardware back down to acceptable temperatures.
The auxiliary pumps shall be Goulds G&L Model eSV 46SV90NT4C60 pumps provided with 75 horsepower, 460 Volt, 60 Hz, three phase 3600 rpm motors, or equivalent pump providing a minimum flow of 400 gallons per minute at a minimum pressure of 390 psig. All equipment shall be designed for installation in an open exterior area with no weather protection. The pony pump skid shall be connected in parallel to the main water pump. All piping and valves shall be 300 series stainless steel. The motors shall be furnished with 460 volt starters.
The skid shall be provided with a local / remote start stop station and a local / remote e‐stop system, and an elapsed time meter.
3. Drawing package. Prior to fabrication, the contractor shall provide a complete drawing package for approval by NASA. NASA has provided a drawing of the skid installation area and the contractor shall locate / organize the pump skids to fit in an orderly manner on the available concrete pad area. The drawings shall show all necessary ancillary equipment, all electrical and control wiring, and the mechanical fabrication of the pumping system. NASA requires three weeks to review and modify, or review and approve the drawings. It is NASA’s intent that a complete system be received at delivery requiring only connection of the pump suction sides to a suction manifold from an on‐site water holding tank, and the connection of the pump discharge to the facility piping system to deliver the water to the nozzle.
4. Early in the design process, the contractor shall identify where the electrical stub ups are to be located on the attached concrete pad drawing so that NASA can have the concrete pad poured and the electrical lines installed on the pad for the pump skid system(s).
5. During commissioning, the supplier shall provide up to 3 days of laser alignment, start‐up and training services for the pump systems by a qualified service technician.
