About this file
This document is a product specification for the Kaydon Model 981 Filtration Assembly, which is a pressure or return line filter for oil and fuel filtration applications. The specification details the assembly's technical specifications, including flow rates, pressure ratings, materials of construction, differential pressure indicator, and replacement filtration elements. It also includes pressure drop curves for various fluid viscosities and micron ratings.
The related federal contract opportunity is a solicitation from the Defense Logistics Agency Land and Maritime for a "Filter Assembly." The solicitation is a HUBZone set-aside, and electronic submission of quotes is available through the SAM website. Contractors required to implement NIST SP 800-171 must have a current assessment, but COTS items are exempt from this requirement. Bids must include a signed and completed solicitation, and contractors must check the applicable boxes in clause 52.204-24.

Text version
Kaydon Model 981 Filtration Assembly is a durable and robust inline pressure or return line (1,200 psig maximum) filter assembly used for oil and fuel filtration applications. The Model 981 is rated for a maximum of 40 gpm for oils and diesel fuel {check pressure drop curves to determine initial (clean) pressure drops for your flow and viscosity}. The Model 981 uses the KMP 9600 series (8 inch length) elements with media selection of 1, 3, 6, 12 and 25 microns. The Model 981 is suitable for use with hydraulic systems used in mobile equipment, small industrial hydraulic power units, small lube systems, and diesel fuel transfer where larger filtration assemblies are not practical. The Model 981 is a substitute for spin‐on type filters where extra protection and a more rugged design is desired. The inlet/outlet connections are 1.5 inch NPTF, so flow restriction is reduced, plus the internal flow path provides low pressure drop (flow resistance). A visual “pop‐up” differential pressure indicator is provided to notify an operator for element replacement. Bowl removal is made easier with a “hand grip” to help twist the bowl from filter head. A safety by‐pass valve set at 50 psid ensures protection of the element and helps maintain flow before element change ‐out is required. Mounting is simplified with four mounting holes (see drawing and photo for location and size). The housing is aluminum construction, making it lightweight, plus the bowl is anodized to protect against corrosion.

Pressure Drop Calculation
1. Determine your flow rate in GPM (gallon per minute)
2. Determine your fluid viscosity in ISO (cSt is same as ISO)
3. Determine element (micron rating) you choose to use for your application
4. With flow, viscosity, and element information, use the appro-priate chart to find the initial (clean) pressure drop,
5. After pressure drop is determined for the element, use 981
Filter Housing chart to determine housing pressure drop.
6. Add element pressure drop and housing pressure drop to calculate total initial (clean) pressure drop.
7. Total initial (clean) pressure drop should =/< 6 psid.
EXAMPLE: Pressure Drop Calculation
1. Flow Rate = 30 gpm
2. Viscosity = ISO 32 (32 cSt)
3. 12 micron element (KMP9600AKM8)
4. Initial (clean) pressure drop (element) = 3 psid
5. Initial (clean) pressure drop (housing) = 1.5 psid.
6. Total initial (clean) pressure drop = 3 psid (element)
+ 1.5 psid (housing) = 4.5 psid (total).
