About this file

The document is a Maintenance Guide and Maintenance Procedures manual for the NELCO Guardian™ RF Door used in MRI suites. The guide details critical maintenance procedures to ensure long-term RF attenuation and smooth door operation, focusing on preventing common issues like corrosion, contact strip damage, and reduced door performance.

Key maintenance recommendations include monthly cleaning of brass contact strips, door frame, jambs, and threshold using a Scotch-Brite pad and CRC Industries QD Contact Cleaner, followed by lubrication with WD-40. Personnel are advised to avoid propping doors open with objects that could damage contact strips, running extension cords across thresholds, or using floor wax and wet mops near the door. The maintenance kit includes specific cleaning materials: CRC QD Contact Cleaner, 3M Scotch-Brite Synthetic Scouring Pad, and WD-40 Lubricant. Monthly hinge and roller lubrication with light machine oil is also recommended to ensure quiet, smooth door movement.

MRI MAINTENANCE GUIDE

Wipe down brass and stainless steel sill with scotch brite pads provided to remove built up dirt and grime which affects the proper sealing of door against stainless steel frame and sill.

Wipe brass and down stainless steel jambs and sill with ALCOHOL once a week to prevent build up of dust and dirt. Excessive build up may cause RF leakage as brass needs to be conductive against clean materials.

Wipe brass with silicone provided to allow for better easier operation of door against stainless steel tracks and jambs

RF Door Design Overview

Compressible RF Contact Strips

The NELCO Guardian" RF Door has incorporated brass contact strips on all four edges of the door core. The contact strips are located on the door leaf and make contact with the beveled surfaces of the door frame and threshold. The brass seal angle contact strips are hemmed. This design affords protection to staff and equipment moving through the door from sharp edges.

The RF contact strips are made of malleable brass that are shaped to compress as the door is closed and to return to their original shape when the door is opened.

The contact strips are most often damaged by the door closing against something that wedges into the seal, such as a broom or mop handle or extension cord.

The RF contact strip at the bottom of the door leaf takes the heaviest wear. This is due to dirt buildup on the stainless steel threshold. The dirt acts as an abrasive reducing the contact strip life. The NELCO Guardlan" RF Door is designed for simple replacement of the brass RF contact strips.

In the event of a damaged contact strip, please contact your NELCO representative for replacement.

The RF door incorporates a push-bar mechanism that is designed to relieve the mechanical stress of opening the RF door.

However, to retain the 100dB RF attenuation, all RF doors out of necessity, must be tight fitting within the RF door frame. When properly maintained, the brass contact strips compression against the beveled surfaces of the door frame cause a spring affect as the door is unlatched to help with door opening.

To insure long term, high performance use of the NELCO Guardian" RF Door, carry out the following periodic maintenance.

Please contact your NELCO representative if you have any questions regarding the NELCO Guardian" RF Door.

RF Door Maintenance Procedures

Your NELCO GUARDIANTM RF shielded door requires very little maintenance. However, there are some things you can do to prevent problems and assure long-term performance of your RF shielded door.

The most common causes of RF shield problems are:

Corrosion on the Door Contact Strips The RF door is the key component of your MRI suite, since it is the only moving part!

To insure quality imaging and continued ease of operation we recommend once a month to clean all the surfaces of the brass contact strips, door frame header, jambs and threshold using a Scotch-Brite pad and CRC Industries QD Contact Cleaner. Rub lightly until you see a clean brass surface. Let dry then lubricate all surfaces with WD-40.

Open & close the door several times to distribute the lubricant into the micro-grooves, and then wipe off excess lubricant.

Do not use excessive pressure when cleaning the brass contact strips. Take care not to bend them.

Follow up this procedure by once a week applying OD Contact Cleaner to a clean cotton cloth and lightly wipe any dirt from the surfaces. Let dry then lubricate all surfaces with WD-40.

The thin film of lubricant prevents corrosion and also helps promote smooth door operation.

Bent Door Contact Strips and/or Dented Threshold This is most often caused by the door closing against something that wedges into the seal, such as a broom or mop handle.

Please instruct all personnel connected with the room - especially the cleaning and maintenance staff - to use caution when working around the RF door contact strips.

Do not prop the door open with anything that may get wedged in the brass contact strips.

Do not run an extension cord across the threshold ever!

In the event of a damaged contact strip, please contact your NELCO representative for replacement.

Loss of RF Attenuation & Increased Door Movement Resistance This is most often caused by the build up of wax or cleaning elements on the threshold making the door bottom brass contact strips stick to the threshold.

Any foreign particles on the threshold will increase friction on the threshold making the door difficult to move and will greatly reduce the overall performance of the RF door.

Please instruct all personnel connected with the room - especially the cleaning and maintenance staff - to not coat the threshold with floor wax or other floor cleaning products.

Do not wet mop across the threshold ever!

To insure quality imaging and continued ease of operation we recommend using a Scotch-Brite pad and QD Contact Cleaner once a week to clean all the stainless steel surfaces of the door -header, jambs and threshold that come in contact with the brass contact strips. Let dry then lubricate the cleaned surfaces by applying WD-40 to a cotton cloth and lightly wiping.

Hinge & Latch Maintenance To insure smooth and quiet movement we recommend using light machine oil once a month to lubricate the hinge bearings and rollers. Wipe off any excess.
