STATEMENT OF WORK

STATEMENT OF WORK

Upgrade High Performance Computing (HPC) Cluster Computer

1.0 BACKGROUND

The Warfare Technology Office (WTO) at NAWCWD in China Lake, California is seeking to purchase parts to upgrade its high performance computing (HPC) cluster computer to further the support of executing simulation and numerical analysis efforts.

Modeling and simulation and numerical analyses constitute a significant portion of weapon system research and development efforts. To complete the work, the simulations require significant computational resources such as large amounts of memory and fast processor speed. HPCs accomplish this through parallelization, which is the use of multiple processor cores by one simulation, and is typically used to make problems tractable and to greatly reduce the time required to obtain results.

The modeling and simulation team has developed a digital simulation to investigate system performance. The code is run in a Monte Carlo fashion to generate statistical significance, as well as across a large case matrix of parameter values to determine situational behavior. The code is compiled and run as a single-threaded executable. As such, one instance of the simulation must be initiated per permutation of the case matrix. Due to the vast number of permutations, a new Linux-based high performance computing cluster was procured which utilizes the latest advances in processor speed, networking speed, memory, and processing core count.

1.1 SCOPE OF WORK

The WTO utilizes its current HPC computing computer to perform simulation experiments and performance analyses. Unforeseen simulation and analyst requirements require the RAM in the HPC cluster computer to be upgraded in order to support parallelization of simulation runs across the multitude of cores available in the environment. Additionally, due to the increase in end users and the amount of data analysts are required to synthesize, data rates through critical hardware interfaces require upgrades, specifically a critical network switch and the surrounding cables and network interface cards. These upgrades will maximize the utility of the HPC cluster computer accounting for current needs and any further future growth.

2.0 REQUIREMENT/SPECIFICATIONS

2.1 INTEGRATED ENVIRONMENT

The Contractor shall provide the necessary hardware to complete the HPC cluster computer upgrade. The Contractor shall provide hardware that is compatible with the existing HPC cluster computer. The HPC upgrade shall include 64 GB RAM upgrades for all available RAM slots, increasing the RAM available to each node. The HPC upgrade shall include an increased data rate network switch with a minimum of 40 Gb Ethernet. The HPC upgrade shall include network interface cards, be compatible with the upgraded network switch and be at least 10 Gb Ethernet capable. The HPC upgrade shall include the cabling that connects the upgraded network switch and the upgraded network interface cards. The Contractor shall supply the hardware in section 3 below.

3.0 DELIVERY
