CARL SANDBURG HOME
National Historic Site
SCOPE OF WORK
INSTALL AND REPAIR LIGHTNING PROTECTION SYSTEM
81 Carl Sandburg Ln.
Flat Rock, NC 28731
PMIS# 314032
STATEMENT OF WORK PART A – GENERAL INFORMATION
A.1 INTRODUCTION – Carl Sandburg Home National Historic Site located at 81 Carl Sandburg Ln, Flat Rock NC, 28731 has a requirement to install a lightning protection system on three buildings in the park’s barn complex and upgrade the existing system on the Main House.
A.2 BACKGROUND – Carl Sandburg Home National Historic Site is in an area with frequent severe storms. This project will add a lightning protection system on three adjacent buildings in the goat barn complex area (the goat barn, milk house, and horse barn). Additionally, the existing lightning protection system at the Main House will be upgraded to meet current standards as described in Section C of this scope of work.
All three buildings within the goat barn complex are historic structures. Photographs of each building and a location map are attached to the scope of work in Appendix A.
• The goat barn built circa 1900 is a large 80-ft x 44-ft rectangular, side-gabled, frame barn with a central paired-door entry, a gabled cupola, a hayloft hood, and side and rear shed additions. The barn is actively used to house dairy goats and the building is supplied with all utilities: electrical, water, and sewer.
• The milk house is a 14 ½-ft x 17 ½-ft x 16 ½ -ft T-plan, rough-faced concrete block building with a cross-gabled roof and exposed end rafters. The building has a gabled, covered pathway connected to the milking barn and two entries on the east façade. A third entry faces north and opens onto a pasture.
• The horse barn is a 20 ½-ft x 31-ft x 19-ft rectangular, one-and-one half story, wood-frame, front gable barn with a steeply pitched, aluminum roof and a full-size entry for the hayloft, which is accessed by an exterior ladder. The barn is clad in weatherboard and has an aluminum roof vent. A stone silo abuts the north elevation.
The Sandburg Home is a three-story antebellum home built in 1838. The historic lightning protection system on the Main House is still functional, but a previous assessment by a lightning protection professional noted additional upgrades were needed to the system to bring it up to current code requirements.
A.3 SCOPE OF WORK – Vendor will provide all parts, labor, equipment, material, training, and supervision to adequately install and/or upgrade the lightning protection systems. All lightning protection installation and repairs shall be in full compliance with NFPA 780, NFPA 70, NFPA 70E, UL 96 and 467, and AFI 32-1065. In the event of conflict between specific details in codes, the most stringent code requirement shall comply.
PERIOD OF PERFORMANCE PART B

The project consists of two phases outlined below: installing a new lightning protection system at the barn complex and updating the lightning protection system at the Main House. Since all work is on historic structures, additional care is required to minimize disturbance to all surfaces and to minimize the number of penetrations into the historic fabric of the structures. All cabling installed shall be located to minimize the visibility of the cables.
Performance Requirements: Comply with LPI 175 requirements for Class I buildings. Install lightning protection components and systems according to LPI 175 codes and requirements.
Lightning Protection Components, Devices, and Accessories: Listed and labeled by a qualified testing agency as complying with UL 96 and marked for intended location and application.
Install a new lightning protection system on the goat barn, milk house, and horse barn:

• Eight 10-inch aluminum air terminals shall be attached to the roof of the barn, rods would be installed within 2' of the end of the building and no more than 20' apart. Rods shall be placed on each vent (the high points).
• Three 10-inch aluminum air terminals shall be attached to the roof of the horse barn
• Three 10-inch aluminum air terminals shall be attached to the roof of the milk house including one on the roof connecting the milk house to the goat barn.
• Two grounding rods shall be driven into the ground at corners of each building (6 total) which will attach to the wires on the protection system (the corners where they would be located shall be approved by park management to minimize visibility and the potential from damage caused by goats)
• Conductor cable shall be installed on the roof connecting the air terminals to the grounds.
Conceal conductors within normal view from exterior locations at grade within 200 feet of building. Comply with requirements for concealed installations in LPI 175. Down conductors shall be installed along side of downspouts with the intention to conceal the conductor as much as possible.
Fasteners on the roof will be adhesive type and anchored type on the face of the building.
Fasteners on the roof will be adhesive compatible with roof materials.
All work shall comply with applicable codes and regulations.
Upgrade lightning protection system at the Main House:
The existing lightning protection system on the main house is functional but doesn’t comply with current code requirements.
• Add a surge protector to the electrical panel. All installed devices shall meet UL 96/ 1449 4th edition standards.
Install one 10-inch aluminum air terminal on each of the three chimneys along the ridge of the house.
The air terminals shall be connected to the existing conductor wires on the roof, which connect to existing ground rods.
Ensure all new and existing conductor cables are properly connected and grounded.
All work shall comply with applicable codes and regulations.
C.2 EXECUTION
