QUESTION

I have just one question regarding the extent of our documentation. The nomination form has six areas of resources, and the recent Upper Delaware study documents resources along the Delaware River portion of the canal. In examining maps, the Barber report, and what the D&H Canal Historical Society has mapped, in addition to the surviving railroad resources, the canal and railroad route present far more extant resources and elements of the canal than what is shown on the existing D&H nomination form and Upper Delaware study.

Should we update only the six areas/resources on the existing D&H nomination form (and include resources found in the recent Upper Delaware study)? We had assumed that the documentation would include all of the resources along the canal and railroad path, documented in a format consistent with the Upper Delaware study and the NY State Barge Canal form.

ANSWER

We expect the contractor to conduct a "windshield survey" of the canal and incorporate suggestions from the NPS for potential resources with a high degree of integrity, with the expectation that there will be more eligible resources to include. These resources should be documented following the NHL guidance. They should use the New York Barge Canal (mentioned in the SOW) as a reference for the level of effort needed.
