Questions and Answers
1. Are all the trees already marked and do you have an estimated tree count/ quantity?
· BLM will mark the trees according to standard
· For the Peak Fire's Piute Mnt road the count totaled 207 trees. Mainly gray pine with a torched oak mot (approx 2 dozen individuals...multi small trunks ....<10 dbh). Approximately a dozen fairly large pines 24 to 30 dbh (included in total count). 60% of individuals are small diameter trees (<12" dbh).
· For the French fire's Sawmill Road, the count totaled 75. Mainly small/medium diameter gray pine <14 dbh, about 30% of the total count is scrub oak that is multistem that are small diameter (<8dbh). There are 2 larger ponderosa pine that are bug killed (24" dbh)
· For the French fire's Old State Road, the count totaled 6 total trees, all gray pine. Average dbh is 10-16".
2. The scope of work talks about hand falling and bucking wood into firewood. Are mechanical treatment methods acceptable as an alternative measure? For example, could we bring a tracked chipper and excavator and mechanically cut and chip all trees up to 18" diameter and buck only the boles larger than 18" into firewood as an option? Mechanical treatment would help us to move through the project faster and create a cleaner finished product, which I believe would help you to meet your timeline requirement of having this done by the end of the year. Please let me know your thoughts.
· Mechanical is acceptable however it must stay on the road surface. There are significant cultural resources in the area and we are trying to keep the footprint light. In addition, a majority of the trees are below 18" dbh, therefore not much firewood would be available for community use.
3. I'm looking to get further information on how you would like this to be bid out. Is there a cost form we can supply our numbers? Tree inventory count? Specs on trees?
· Refer to question #1 for tree inventory count. Mainly gray pine with a minority being scrub oak. The intent of to only reduce hazard trees from impacting road and providing community with firewood.
