Q1. What is the function of the box that has the open bottom?

A1.

The Open Bottom Box will house a seismic sensor. The box is sent into a 4 inch concrete pad because the sensor has to rest on the concrete and not be on metal attached to concrete.

Q2. What is the function of the mast assembly?

A2.

The Mast assembly will hold 1 200 Watt Solar Panel and one small cellular antenna or radio antenna

Q3. Lastly, is the hinge on the lid able to be changed for functionality?

A3.

Let us know what you have in mind and we can decide if it is ok.

Q4. Do these need a locking mechanism or any hardware/handles/wheels?

A4.

No, we have a separate construction contractor that supplies those items as part of their contract with

USGS

Q5. As for the size of this tube is 9feet, What is the thickness of it, Is there any requirement for its thickness?

A5.

Yes, min. 1/ 4 inch thickness, ASTM A36

Q6. What is the length of the NPT A6.

2 inches

Q7. What grade of aluminum do they want used for the boxes?

A7.

Aluminum – 1/8 thick 5052 grade Aluminum

Q8. On page 5 for the mast, they mention using galvanized steel and then powder coated. It has to be one or the other and not both. Which do they prefer?

A8.

Steel – hot dip galvanize the steel then send for powder coating. We know it can be done as we have hundreds of these masts already deployed with powder coating.

Q9. There seems to be a clearance issue with this hinge and lid dimensions. The size of the lid would have to increase by approximately ¼” of an inch in the 36 ½” dimension. So finish size of the lid would be 24 ½” X 36 ¾”.

A9.

That is ok with us

Q10. It doesn’t specify the Alloy to be used for fabrication?

A10.

1/8 thick 5052 grade Aluminum for boxes

Mast assembly – Pipe is Schedule 40 bare pipe, ASTM A500, Flange is 3/8 steel plate ASTM A36, Welded supports ¼ steel plate ASTM 36

Q11. Does the hinge need to be powder coated?

A.11 yes

Q12. Can there be overspray of powder coating on inside of box?

A12.

yes

Q13. How many inches of threading on the piping?

A13.

Q14. Do either of these boxes require handles to secure the door closed or weather stripping on the doors?

A14.

No – we have another contractor that does that portion.

Q15. Which side of the box the hinge goes on and if you wanted holes in the flanges on the open bottom boxes, etc? And a few others.

A15.

The hinges go on the length of the box, and no we do not require holes on the flanges of the open bottom boxes.

Q16. Can we weld the hinge to the box instead of using bolts, or do you want the lid to be removable?

A16.

Due to vandalism we encounter at sites we prefer the lid to be removable.

Q17. If you prefer not to weld, we would need to countersink the holes in the hinge and use a tapered head screw and not a bolt.

A17.

This is ok.

Q18. How far can a bolt protrude into the interior of the box?

A18.

No more than1/4 inch

Q19. Which side of each box do you want the hinge mounted to? Please provide the length of the side you would like the hinge welded to.

A19.

We do not want the hinge welded.

Q20. As per ITEM No. 00030, Do you require “Air Freight” to ship these boxes? Shipping via common carrier by ground freight would be a much lower cost.

A20.

Shipping by ground is ok as long as we get advance notice of delivery, our warehouse is not manned normally.

Q21. How many rivets would you like us to use, what material would you want us to use, and what should the spacing be?

A21.

Your discretion, as long as the hinge is what we call out and the rivets will satisfactorily hold the hinge and weight of lid.

Q22. The ½” holes in the base plate show no location. Do we estimate the location?

A22.

Yes, ideally centered on each side. Our jig that we use for placing anchor bolts in the concrete allows for some flexibility.

Q23. On the front view, there is a call out for 4 ½” diameter holes, and I’m assuming this means two per side.

A23.Yes

Q24. Is the 3/8” hole only on the left side?

A24.

Yes

Q25. No dimension is shown for the bend or the angle of the bend of the welded supports. We can approximate based on your drawing if that works.

A25.Yes, this is ok

Q26. Do you have a call out for the hardware to connect the lid to the box?

A26.

Just the hinge, you can use your discretion on hardware to attach hinge to lid and box so long as it can support the weight and movement of the lid while attached to box.
