Salient Characteristics Personal Flotation Devices (PFD’s)

The Hydrologic Instrumentation Facility (HIF) needs to procure Personal Flotation Devices (PFD’s) for replenishment of its warehouse stock. The PFD’s are safety items that are required to be worn by field personnel whenever they are working over, or around, water bodies, such as on bridges or piers.

PERSONAL FLOTATION DEVICES (PFD’s)

Requirements for Personal Flotation Devices (PFD’s)

1. Shall be Mustang Survival part no. MD3183 T3 inflatable PFD or equal.

2. Shall include lettering “USGS” silkscreened on back of PFD (Mustang part no. CS1500). Text shall be

2-inches high x 6-inches long in block lettering, color shall be black.

3. Shall include USGS patch sewn on front left of PFD (Mustang part no. CS1000). Patches to be provided as Government Furnished Property. No other means for attaching patch is acceptable.

4. Shall meet current ANSI 107 standard approved fluorescent yellow-green color.

5. Shall include retroreflective material on front and back in accordance with 46 CFR (Code of Federal

Regulations) 25.25-15 and 46 CFR 164.018, Appendix 31-A, Retroreflective Material for Personal

Flotation Devices. Shall have a minimum of 31 sq. inches (200 sq. cm) on both sides. Material attached must be divided equally between upper and lower areas of the side and must be attached as closely to the shoulder area as possible. (CFR = Code of Federal Regulations)

6. Shall be USCG approved PFD and meet current ANSI 107 standard of fluorescent yellow-green color and required retroreflective material configuration.

7. These PFD’s, and only these, are approved and authorized for use by USGS.
