Q&A’s
Q1. For installation of the optical tables, I need a moving path from the loading dock to the labs where the optical tables will be installed. Can you provide this info?
A1. There is a breezeway between the AML and building 220 where the tables could be brought in and would not need to travel in an elevator. From there it is likely 150 feet or so to the laboratory. So there should be no size issue in getting a 4x10 table into the laboratory.
Q2. Does the building where the tables will be installed have a standard loading dock?
A2. Yes.
Q3. Top and bottom plates shall be 5 mm thick with a tolerance of plus or minus 2 mm. This requirement doesn't seem to make sense because the tolerance is 40% of the stated thickness. So plates can be as thin as 3 mm or as thick as 7 mm. STD thickness for plates is 5 mm and remove the tolerance of +/- 2mm. There is a material price difference in 3 vs7 mm stainless steel plates.
A3. 5 mm thickness plates are good.
Q4. To facilitate delivery and installation, optical breadboard tabletop may be shipped as either one or two sections. If shipped as two sections, the two sections must be joined at NIST to form a continuous single optical breadboard tabletop meeting all minimum specifications.
Again, there is a significant price difference in a monolithic 4'x10' table vs two section joined end-to-end to form a 4x10 table. You have to specify what table size can be rigged through the moving path from the loading dock to the labs.
A4. One-piece tabletops are preferred.
Q5. Would this custom part be considered ITAR controlled or for military use?
No.
Q6. Can non-US persons our of company work on the design and production of these custom parts?
A6. Yes.
Q7. You state that the tables may be delivered in one or two sections to facilitate delivery.
Can tables of this size be delivered in one piece from your loading dock to the lab(s)?
A7. Yes.
Q8. Are the elevators big enough to accommodate 8 and 10 foot long tables?
A8. No elevator is required to reach the laboratory.
Q9. If we must make the tables in sections, the cost is going to increase significantly.
A9. Sectioned tables are not needed. See A7 above.
Q10. On a related note, you have also requested that the tables be installed at the time of delivery. We will have to enlist the services of an outside rigging company for these purposes.
They are going to want to know the exact location (Building/room number) of the final installation site in order to issue a rigging estimate. Please provide this information.
A10. They will be installed in Building 221/A42.
Q11. Aside from the size of the table-tops, no other technical specifications are given with respect to damping characteristics. We have many performance levels available, nominally damped through highly damped, prices vary accordingly. Absent this information, we will be quoting our "Base" model for this solicitation.
A11. This is acceptable.
Q12. You repeatedly refer to "Active Vibration Isolation Legs". Active vibration isolation legs are typically based on sophisticated closed loop piezo-electric legs that utilize high-end servo controllers and sensitive vibration sensors to actively cancel disturbances from the floor. Systems such as these, for tables this size, would cost $80,000-100,000 per table. Is this what you want?
A12. No, see A13 below.
Q13 My guess is that you will actually need passive, auto-leveling pneumatic legs. I am aware of one manufacturer that uses this misleading description (Active Isolation) to describe their passive auto-leveling legs. Please clarify.
A13. Passive auto-leveling pneumatic legs are acceptable.
