STATEMENT OF WORK

TITLE: Laser Interferometry System and Accessories

BRAND NAME ONLY

I. Background This is a procurement for laser systems and accessories for error mapping of equipment used for dimensional measurements and calibrations by the Dimensional Metrology Group (DMG). The DMG performs many critical measurements calibrations each year for external and internal customers using equipment that has inherent errors. These errors must be carefully quantified in order to achieve the low uncertainties and high confidence that the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) customers demand. One of the primary tools that is used for quantifying errors is laser interferometry systems, which are composed of lasers with stable frequencies, environmental measurement and compensation units and specialized optics. Our need for laser interferometry systems has grown substantially in the past few years, with several new Coordinate Measuring Machines (CMM) coming online and a CRADA which also requires significant use of our mapping laser systems. The procurement will provide the lasers and accessories that we need to meet our current needs.

Brand Name Only Justification To fulfill NIST’s mission, the Dimensional Metrology Group (DMG) requires a laser interferometer system. The DMG developed measurement machinery, Moore M48 #3 “Ralph” calibration and measurement (NIST Tape Tunnel lab) systems that utilize devices and components manufactured by Renishaw, Inc. “Ralph” had the Renishaw controller installed in May of 2018 and the tape tunnel has utilized the Renishaw laser system for almost two (2) decades. To meet customer requirements, advance the development process of the current “Ralph” measurement machines and upgrade the laboratory, DMG requires two (2) interferometry systems (with accessories). The only system which meets NIST’s needs is the Renishaw’s interferometry system, model number XL80. The Renishaw interferometry systems is required because the existing M48 CMM #3 utilizes a Renishaw control system which directly interfaces with the existing Renishaw XL80 interferometry system. The Renishaw XL-80 is used to provide a reference measurement to calibrate the machine. It plugs directly in to the controller to provide this data; and requires no special equipment or effort to supply the calibration data to the machine being calibrated. One (1) of the two (2) Renishaw XL80 interferometry system is a direct replacement for the existing ML 10x laser interferometry system being used for the measuring tape tunnel calibration lab. The replacement system must be compatible with the existing laser mapping systems and software; AND a CMM controller. the existing CMM controller is Renishaw model number UCC S3. The existing mapping software is provided is proprietary Renishaw software which is known as UCC Assist. NIST uses custom mapping software, LabView programming software which was written and designed to be 100% compatible with the Renishaw software, UCC S3. To accomplish the DMG mission, the laser interferometry system must have the following essential characteristics:

1. The required laser interferometry system must directly interface with the existing M48 CMM#3

2. Must be a seamless, direct replacement for the existing Renishaw system XL80 model and require minimum redevelopment.

3. Must be 100% compatible with existing in-house developed (LabView software program) laser mapping system and plug directly into Renishaw UCC S3 CMM controller.

4. Must be 100% compatible with existing software, Renishaw’s UCC Assist, and in-house developed LabView software programs.

Laser Head shall weigh less than 2kg, have a foot print no greater than 220mm x

The contractor shall provide two (2) laser interferometry systems inclusive of two (2) Renishaw XL 80 laser kits, model A-9908-0405, two (2) Renishaw XC-80 compensator kits, model A-9908-0510, one (1) Renishaw XR20-W rotary axis calibrator, one (1) Renishaw XL tripod stage kit, model A-9908-0700, one (1) Renishaw universal tripod base, model A-9908-0295, two (2) Renishaw XL base systems, model M-9908-0313, one (1) Renishaw linear optics kit, A-8003-2353, Renishaw model, one (1) Renishaw angular optics kit, A-8003-2317, Renishaw model number A-8003-2317, one (1) Renishaw optics mounting kit, model A-8003-0447, and one (1) Renishaw fixed turning mirror, model A-8003-1325.
