Tatham Ridge Fuels Project, 129AC718Q0048 Amended Page 25

Retain all existing downed logs (20 inches in diameter or greater at the large end and at least 10 feet in length not to exceed 4 logs per acre). Snags shall not be cut unless they present an immediate hazard to operations in the project area. Cut snags shall be left in place on the ground.

All trees over 12 feet tall that are not cut shall be pruned of lower branches. Branches shall be pruned from the ground to 6 feet high. Pruning shall be conducted in such a way that there is no damage to the main stem of the tree.

All cut material over 1 inch in diameter shall be piled (except for cut snags), unless terrain and tree spacing does not allow for proper pile location. Sections of tree boles over 10 inches in diameter may be bucked to 6—8 feet sections, and stacked separately from the burn pile and/or scattered on the forest floor. No “jackstrawing” of cut and scattered logs shall be allowed. All piles shall be constructed by laying limbs, stems, cut boles, and other slash in the pile so as to be parallel with each other and up and down the slope to prevent material from rolling downhill during pile ignition. Each pile shall include an area of small sized slash near the bottom of the pile to provide kindling for prompt ignitions and to aid in combustion of larger slash.

Maximum pile size shall be 6 feet in diameter by 6 feet in height. All material shall be cut to a length such that it can be placed in a pile without exceeding these maximum dimensions (see Pile Construction figure below). There may be instances where larger piles are acceptable. For example, in a large opening, 50 feet in diameter, a pile may be 10 feet in diameter by 6 feet high. The Contractor shall contact the COR if suitable locations are found for approval to create these larger piles. In other areas, it may be beneficial to remove a leave tree if too much cut material is present and create a larger opening for a larger pile. The COR shall be contacted to give approval of such locations.

Other suitable and preferred locations are on existing skid trails scattered throughout the units. Piles shall be constructed at least 15 feet apart, unless the COR gives his/her consent. All hand piles shall be covered with 4ft X 4ft, 6 mil thick plastic to promote drying and ignitions. Brush/slash shall be piled on the plastic to ensure it stays in place. Piles shall be placed so that flames from the pile will not impact leave trees.

Piles shall not be closer than 10 feet from leave trees and felled snags. Piles shall not be closer than 20 feet from unit boundaries, edges of roads or trails, meadows, or private ground. Piles shall be located a minimum of 5 feet away from stream channels, springs, or seeps. Not all water features within the project area have been identified therefore pile locations shall be determined as water features are discovered. Pile locations may be approved by the COR or other designated Government representative in the field. Slash shall not be piled or placed on logs, on stumps larger than 2 feet in diameter, in ditches, against trees, or left within 25 feet of roads. All open roads shall be kept free of thinning slash.
