SECTION 33 16 13

PLASTIC WATER STORAGE TANK

1.

2. PART 1 - GENERAL

1.1 SUMMARY

A. This Section includes the following:

1. Water Tanks.

2. Tank Accessories.

3. Water Lines and Drain Lines.

4. Valves.

5. Valve Boxes.

6. Float Valve.

1.2 SUBMITTALS

A. Product Data: Submit manufacturer’s product information and/or certifications for the following:

1. Storage tank shop Drawings, include the following (fabrication of the tank shall begin after shop Drawings have been approved by the Contracting Officer):

a. Access opening and cover fabrication, location, dimensions, and methods of connection.

b. Nozzle fabrication, location, and methods of connection.

2. Storage tank manufacturer’s data sheets and installation instructions.

3. Certification from the tank manufacturer that the tank was tested by the manufacturer at the factory and meets the design criteria specified.

B. Submit sample and gradation curve of tank bedding material for approval by the Contracting Officer, if applicable. Certification from the tank supplier and/or manufacturer that the tank bedding material meets the requirements in Part 2.

C. Operation and Maintenance Data: Storage tank and related accessories.

1.3 QUALITY ASSURANCE

A. Pre-installation Conference: The manufacturer’s representative and the Contractor shall conduct a conference or meeting at Project site to discuss and review methods and procedures related to installing the storage tank according to the manufacturer’s written instructions. The Contracting Officer shall have the option of attending this conference or meeting.

PART 2 - PRODUCTS

2.1 WATER TANKS

A. Provide a high density polyethylene (HDPE) above ground potable water storage tank.

B. Available Manufacturers (or an approved equal):

1. Norwesco Corporation (HDPE) as distributed by Preferred Pump, Anderson CA, phone 530-365-3434; Norwesco Part Number: #41379

C. Design Criteria

1. The tank shall be fabricated with the correct number of threaded openings of the proper sizes to accommodate the pipes, valves, and controls as shown on the Drawings.

2. Tank shall be vented to atmospheric pressure, as the tank is not a pressure vessel.

2.2 TANK ACCESSORIES

A. Access Openings and Covers

1. Furnish access openings and covers as shown on the Drawings and manufactured by the tank manufacturer.

2. Access opening cover or lid shall be insect proof, overlapping, hinged, water tight with O-ring and/or gasket and lockable. The lid must extend down the frame at least two inches and must cover the entire opening.

3. Identification:

a. Label access opening cover or lid with sign reading “DANGER –

CONFINED SPACE, ENTER BY PERMIT ONLY” or other similar language approved by the Contracting Officer. Sign must be permanently mounted in a clearly visible location on the access opening cover.

b. Label tank with 6” high letters reading “NON-POTABLE”. Letters must be permanently painted in a clearly visible location. Color approved by the Contracting Officer.

4. Lock will be supplied and installed by the Forest Service.

B. Nozzles and Flanges

1. Tanks shall be furnished with all nozzles, flanges, and other appurtenances as shown on the Drawings.

2. Threads on nozzles shall be standard NPT.

3. All flanged connections shall be gasketed.

C. Lifting Lugs

1. Lifting lugs shall be provided as recommended by the manufacturer and shall be an integral part of the tank.

D. Vent

1. Vent assembly and screen shall be part of the 22” lid assembly shown in the Drawings.

2.3 WATER LINES

A. Pipe: Sch. 80 Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) pipe with a minimum pressure rating of 125 psi. Pipe size as shown on Drawings.

2.4 VALVES

A. Ball Valves: Sch. 80 Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) valve with True Union and Viton O- Rings.

B. Available Manufacturers:

1. Spears, or an approved equal.

2.5 VALVE BOXES

A. Valve Boxes and risers shall be made of concrete; lids shall be made of Fibrelyte or Concrete. Valve boxes shall be listed for the location installed.

B. Available Manufacturers:

1. Christy FL08 Box and Lid, or an approved equal.

2.6 NON-MODULATING FLOAT VALVE

A. Description: Hydraulically operated diaphragm float valve with single moving assembly, and adjustable float, size and pressure rating as shown on the Drawings.

All internal valve components shall be removable and repairable while the valve body remains in the line. The valve shall open fully at a pre-set float level, flow at a full

March 2016 Middle Creek Water Tank 33 16 13 - 4/6 Plastic Water Storage Tanks rate until reaching the pre-set high float level, and then close drip-tight without slamming.

B. Model: Vortex float valve by Jobe Valves, or an approved equal.

2.7 SAMPLE TAP

A. Description: Provide and install a sample tap on the distribution line, just after the storage tank that meets the requirements of the State Water Resources Control Board. Supply line for the sample tap shall be ½” Sch. 80 PVC with ½” Sch. 80 PVC shut-off valve.

PART 3 - EXECUTION

3.1 TANK INSTALLATION

A. The tank shall be installed in strict accordance with the manufacturer’s installation instructions.

3.2 SETTING TANK

A. The tank shall be placed on the existing concrete tank pad. The Contractor must obtain the approval of the Contracting Officers Representative prior to placing the storage tank. The tank shall be lifted, placed, or otherwise handled using a spreader bar to insure vertical support cables at each lift ring.

3.3 TANK DEFLECTION

A. Maximum allowable tank deflection (diameter out of round) shall be as follows:

1. 12’ diameter tank: 1” allowable deflection

3.4 WATER PIPE AND APPURTENANCES

A. Water pipes and drain pipes shall be installed as described herein, and as shown on the Drawings.

B. Pipe Installation:

1. Handle and install pipe in accordance with manufacturer’s installation instructions.

2. Place pipe so its full length bears uniformly on the bedding material. Do not lay pipeline in water.

3. Keep interior of pipeline and joining surfaces clean. Plug exposed ends of pipe at end of work shifts.

4. Make all cuts square and ream. Do not used damaged pipe.

5. All solvent welded joints shall be cleaned, primed and cemented in accordance with the manufacturer’s recommendations.

6. Slope drain line as shown on the Drawings.

7. Do not exceed the manufacturer’s maximum deflection.

8. Install unions at locations shown on the drawings.

C. Valve Installation:

1. Install valves according to manufacturer’s recommendations.

3.5 VALVE BOX INSTALLATION

A. Center box on valve or valve group. Use extension risers where applicable. Valve box lid shall be level with finished ground.

1. Extended valve keys shall be provided at the tank wherever necessary to facilitate valve access at depths to which standard valve keys would not reach.

3.6 FLOAT VALVE INSTALLATION

A. A float valve shall be installed on the incoming line, as shown on the drawings. The float shall be set such that the valve will shut off when the water level in the tank reaches 29" below the tank top. Successfully test the operation of the valve in the presence of the Contracting Officers Representative.

3.7 INSPECTION AND TESTING

A. Tank Leak Test

1. The tank, excluding the access openings, shall be subjected to a leak test. The Contractor shall furnish all facilities and personnel for conducting the test and shall conduct the test.

2. All nozzles shall be sealed to prevent water from escaping during the test.

Water shall be introduced into the tank until the level reaches the top of the tank but shall not extend into the access openings. At least 24 hours shall be allowed for the tank to stabilize. The tank will be termed "Acceptable" if the level remains the same after 8 hours.

3. If the tank fails to meet the acceptable test requirements, the Contractor shall determine the source of leakage and make the necessary repairs or adjustments, as approved by the Contracting Officer, until the acceptable criteria is met.

B. Water Pipe Leak Test

1. All water pipe shall be connected, as shown on the drawings, and filled with water prior to backfilling water pipe trench. Repair any visible leak at the joints or valves and re- fill water lines.

3.8 FINISH GRADING

A. Upon completion of the tank installation and after backfilling operations are complete, the area shall be finish graded with subsequent backfill to the specified grade and lines shown on the Drawings to present a smooth appearance. All debris and material not utilized shall be cleaned up and taken to a designated disposal site.

PART 4 - MEASUREMENT AND PAYMENT

4.1 METHOD OF MEASUREMENT

A. Measurement for the work described herein, in related sections and as shown on the drawings will be lump sum.

4.2 BASIS OF PAYMENT

A. Payment will be made under:
