About this file

This statement of work outlines a refrigeration system retrofit project for a tree cooler. The scope of work involves replacing the outdated R22 refrigerant system with a new system that utilizes an approved refrigerant compliant with California regulations. It also requires repairing or replacing necessary pipes and components to allow proper function of the new refrigeration system and maintain a temperature range of 33 to 36 degrees Fahrenheit in the tree cooler. The alarm system must also be repaired or replaced to notify the Hume Lake Ranger District of the U.S. Forest Service via telephone if the temperature range is exceeded. Temperature gauges should be repaired or replaced as needed. The related federal contract opportunity is solicitation number 127EAS23Q0120 for tree cooler service issued by the U.S. Department of Agriculture Forest Service.

STATEMENT OF WORK

Sequoia – FY23 Pinehurst Tree Cooler Retrofit for Hume Lake Ranger District Restoration Projects

Background:

The Pinehurst tree cooler was installed in 1985 and serves to maintain the cold storage of tree seedlings to be planted in restoration projects on the district. Proper temperature control is paramount for the health and survival of seedlings, and a deciding factor in the success of reforestation projects.

The refrigeration system that cools the tree cooler is out-of-date and utilizes R22 refrigerant – this R22 formulation is no longer in production and there is a finite supply remaining that is subject to increasing costs and is no longer approved for use in California. This has created a need to retrofit the tree cooler with a new refrigeration system that utilizes a currently produced and state approved refrigerant. The cooler has temperature gauges and a temperature alarm to ensure the protection of these valuable resources, both of which are currently inoperable.

Scope of Work:

Replace the refrigerant to be compliant with California state regulations.

Replace necessary pipes or other components to allow proper function using the new refrigerant to maintain a temperature range 33 – 36 degrees Fahrenheit.

Repair/replace the alarm system to be able to notify a district employee via telephone should this temperature range be exceeded.

Repair/replace the temperature gauges as necessary.
