SECTION C – DESCRIPTION AND SPECIFICATIONS

C.1 PROJECT DESCRIPTION AND LOCATION

C.1.1 Intent of Contract – The intent of the contract is to provide for the completion of the work described below. The precise details of performing the work are not stipulated, except as considered essential for the successful completion of the work. Furnish all labor, material, equipment, tools, transportation, and supplies necessary to complete the work according to the contract.

C1.2 Scope of Contract. The intent of the contract is to provide a complete project as described in the contract. Unless otherwise provided, furnish all labor, materials, equipment, tools, transportation, and supplies to perform all work required to complete the project. The contractor shall be responsible for all building measurements to determine necessary quantities and sizes of material to be supplied.

Bidding measurements – OTO House – Roof Square Feet 2,800.

(Measurements are approximate and for bidding purposes only. Contractor shall verify building measurements prior to ordering materials.)

Work shall consist of removing and disposing of the existing asphalt shingle roof system and furnishing and installing a new asphalt roof shingle system on the OTO House. Contractor shall work with the manufacturer’s technical representatives to ensure their work will meet all requirements for a warranted job. Contractor shall be responsible to barricade off area to ensure the safety of those near the work zone.

ITEM 1, Mobilization: Work shall consist of preparatory work and operations, including those necessary to the movement of personnel, equipment, supplies, and incidentals to the project site;

and for other work and operations that must be performed or costs incurred prior to beginning work on the various items on the project site.

ITEM 2, Demolition: OTO House is a single-story facility used as a residence. The Contractor shall remove all material to the sheeting. Dispose of all material off Forest property. The Contractor will inspect the sheeting, vent covers and general condition of the roof and inform the CO if any areas are damaged or in need of replacement before the new roof system is put on. All nails, staples and any protruding objects will be removed as part of demolition.

See Section 0700 of the Specifications for removal procedures and recommendations for cleanup. Contractor shall be responsible to barricade off area to ensure the safety of those near the work zone and comply with all OSHA Regulations.

ITEM 3, Install double layer Ice & Water Barrier above porch to 4’ up mainentire roof:

Ice & Water Barrier shall be installed over the entire roof and a double layer over porch roof extending 4’ up the main house roof.

ITEM 4, Shingle Supply and Installation: The work shall consist of furnishing and installing new asphalt roof shingle system as specified in section 07000 of the specifications on the OTO House located in Gardiner, MT.

ITEM 5, Demolish chimney and Patch Roof Deck: The work shall consist of removing the existing cinderblock and clay tile flue chimney. Remove to below the roof deck, and patch roof deck with appropriate thickness (apx. 5/8”) sheathing.

C.1.3 Project Location – This project is located on the Gardiner Ranger District of the Custer

Gallatin National Forest near Gardiner, Montana.

C.1.4 Price Range – Less Than $25,000

C.1.5 Pre-bid Tour – No pre-bid tour of the project will be conducted.

Prospective bidders wishing to visit the site on their own may obtain direction information by contacting Zac Hiedeman at the Bozeman Office, Custer Gallatin National Forest, Bozeman, Montana, telephone (406) 946-2866.

C.1.6 Start Work – It is estimated that work will begin in June 2024.

C.1.7 Period of Performance – Contract to be completed in 14 calendar days.

C.1.8 Government Furnished Materials – NA

C.1.9 Submittals- The contractor shall submit a Work Schedule.

C.1.10 Disturbances –No work shall be permitted on Federal Holidays. Home shall remain accessible to the Resident at all times.

C.1.11 Staging Area – The Contractor shall coordinate with the CO on a staging area location. The

Contractor shall operate all equipment and store, transport, and handle materials in a manner that will not damage the existing roads, parking lots, landscaping, and other improvements.

Access must be maintained to the residence, and other facilities on the site.

C.1.13 Potable Water- The contractor may use the water on-site.

C.1.14 Wastewater Facilities – No public restrooms are available on site. The Contractor shall be responsible for providing restroom facilities for their employees.

C.1.15 Electrical – The Contractor may use on-site electrical service for operation of small power tools, and a compressor.

C.2 – CLEANUP AND DISPOSAL

C.2.1 Cleanup and Disposal – The Contractor shall be responsible for solid waste disposal. The

Contractor shall at all times keep the area in a clean, neat, and orderly condition. Construction related debris, including but not limited to used motor oil, oil cans, grease cartridges and refuse shall be removed promptly from the site and disposed of in a lawful manner off National Forest System lands. Fees for the use of landfills or transfer stations shall be paid for by the Contractor if there is a charge.

C.3 – SECURITY AND PROTECTION

C.3.1 Security and Protection – Security is the responsibility of the Contractor. The Contractor shall be responsible for protecting all equipment and supplies for use on the project and stored on the site. The Contractor shall be responsible for all costs required to provide such protection.

The Contractor shall complete sequences of construction activity in order to prevent damage to equipment, material, and articles incorporated into the work covered by this contract.

SECTION 07000

BUILDING MAINTENANCE

PART I – GENERAL

1.1 Scope of Contract.

Contractor is responsible for transportation, tools, labor, equipment, personal protective equipment, and material disposal necessary to complete the work. All materials generated from the project are to be removed from the site and disposed of in a legal manner off National Forest System lands. Disposal shall comply with all local, state, and federal regulations.

The Contractor will provide all materials, equipment, and labor to remove and reshingle the OTO House at the Gardiner Ranger District OTO Compound which is located near Gardiner, MT.

1.2 Section Requirements

A. Remove existing asphalt roofing system down to existing wood sheathing. Remove cinder block chimney to below roof deck; patch roof deck. Furnish and install new composition shingle roofing system, including; drip edge, Ice and Water Barrier underlayment, roofing nails, flashing, drip edge, and asphalt shingles.

PART II - PRODUCTS

2.1 Materials

A. A. Shingles – Shingle shall be Malarky Legacy XL Scotchguard Architectural Shingle, Natural Wood color, or CO approved equal. The composite shingle shall meet UL 2218, shall be class 4 impact resistant, and 110 mph wind rating. The shingle shall have a 50 year limited warranty. Starter course and ridge cap shingles to match.

i. Shingles shall be:

A. Malarky Legacy XL Scotchguard Architectural Shingle, Natural Wood color B. Owens Corning TruDefinition Duration Flex, Brownwood color C. or CO approved equal.

A.B. Underlayment, valley and eave flashing, rake edges and chimmey / vent – underlayment shall be Arctic Seal Ice and Water Barrier, or CO-approved equivalent to meet shingle manufacturer’s warranty requirements, 65 mils thickness, or equal. Install per manufacturer’s specifications.

i. Install double layer over lower porch roof and 4’ up main roof.

B.C. Flashing - 24 gauge steel step and counter flashing for chimney and vent pipe extrusions and valleys.

-Existing headwall flashing above West porch at gable end may remain in place

C.D. Nails - Hot dipped galvanized roofing. Staples are not acceptable and will be rejected.

D.E. Drip edge – SteelStandard, 24 guage, D-style, color to match trim.

2.2 Submittals

A. Contractor shall submit to COR:

a. Shingle style and color choices

b. Flashing and trim color choices

c. Installation Guides for all approved product

d. Roofing Sealants and Nails

e. Ice & Water Barrier

f. Spec sheets for all products to be used

g. All submittals must be approved by CO prior to purchase of material.

PART III - EXECUTION

3.1 Execution of the Work

A. Contractor will remove sections of existing roof material down to existing wood and cover to protect from weather each working day.

a. Protection from elements, tear off only what can be weather proofed in one day or tarp roof.

B. Shrubbery and inprovements adjacent to the building shall be protected during the contractors operations. Any damage to the building or grounds will be repaired by the contractor at the contractors expense.

C. Material removed from the roof shall be legally disposed of by the contractor. At the completion of work the contractor will perform a final site cleanup. Contractor shall use a magnet around entire work site to ensure all nails are removed from around building area.

D. Contractor shall inform the COR of any sheathing areas needing repair as they are uncovered as well as any vent covers that may need to be replaced/repaired.

E. Ice and water shield barrier will be laid directly on the sheathing and over top of metal drip edge along entire length of eave.

a. Apply over entire roof, with double layer over lower porch roof extending 4’ up the main house roof above porch.

b. 62” wide in valley over top of metal flashing with 12” overlap of ice guard in valley.

F. Chimneys, vents, and protrusions shall be flashed with new flashings.

E. Shingles will be attached to flashings with plastic cement.

G. Shingles shall be installed in accordance with the manufacturers specifications.

H. Shingle courses shall be laid straight and checked with string lines during installation.

Use recommended number of fasteners per shingle and place fasteners according to the shingle manufacturers specifications. Apply the shingles across and diagonally up the roof.

I. Metal valley flashing shall be installed in one continuous piece per valley and shall be secured without puncturing by placing roofing nails every 12” along both edges such that the nail shanks are immediately adjacent to the metal edge and the nail head holds the flashing.

J. Follow manufacture’s recommendation for valleys to be constructed. No fastener should be within 6” of the valley centerline, the first course will extend at least 12” onto adjoining roof, and each cut shingle will be embedded in a 3” strip of plastic cement.

K. The underlayment shall be laid out horizontally (parellel) to the eave with the appropriate side up, and with the 4” horizontal laps and 6” vertical laps or per manufacturer’s instructions.

L. Each shingle shall be securely nailed with minimum six (6) roofing rails or as recommended by the manufacturer for maximum wind rating.

M. The shingles shall be laid out with the ends barely touching each other and a snapped chalk line to ensure shingles are laid out in a parellel fashion or as recommended by the manufacturer.

N. All shingles shall be laid out with a 5 5/8” exposure unless otherwise recommended by the manufacturer.

3.2 Payment

A. Payment shall be as shown on the schedule of items.
