The University of Alabama Office for Sponsored Programs Division has been awarded a $299,228 Project Grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Health Resources and Services Administration's Advanced Nursing Education Workforce (ANEW) Grant Program (CFDA 93.247). The overarching purpose of this 3-year project, beginning July 1, 2024, is to increase the supply, distribution, and quality of Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) workforce in the rural West Central Alabama region. Key project activities include: 1) training and certifying 20 SANE nurses, with a 90% retention rate, 2) expanding access to SANE examinations in rural areas through new academic-community partnerships, and 3) enhancing the curriculum with content on health equity, social determinants of health, and rural health. The project aims to address the shortage of trained SANEs, especially in underserved communities, by providing didactic, simulation, and clinical training, as well as mentoring and continuing education support.
