The University of Georgia Laboratory of Archaeology will receive $770,583 from the Institute of Museum and Library Services under the Save America's Treasures federal grant program (CFDA 15.929) to rehouse and digitize its paleoenvironmental archives from Georgia's coastal zone from December 1, 2022 to November 30, 2025. Staff will work with graduate and undergraduate students as well as a database consultant to inventory, rehouse, and digitize collections pertaining to Native American sites in Georgia from 4500 years ago to the 17th century. This will include artifacts and documents uncovered through excavations on barrier islands and the adjacent mainland. Consultation will also occur with descendant communities such as the Geechee of Sapelo Island and Pinpoint community and the Muscogee Nation regarding the material histories represented in the artifacts.
