The University of Nebraska was awarded a $2,000,000 Project Grant on July 31, 2024 from the U.S. Department of Education's Office of Elementary and Secondary Education to support the "Knowledge Network for Early Childhood Education Workforce (KNEW)" program under CFDA 84.215, Innovative Approaches to Literacy; Promise Neighborhoods; Full-Service Community Schools; and Congressionally Directed Spending for Elementary and Secondary Education Community Projects.

The KNEW program aims to address the recruitment and retention of early childhood teachers and providers in rural Nebraska in order to build a high-quality, equitable early childhood education (ECE) workforce. The University of Nebraska will partner with the Nebraska Children & Families Foundation and utilize its Extension Early Childhood team to co-create and implement individualized professional learning experiences for ECE teachers and providers in 10 rural Nebraska communities. This effort will evaluate the impact of the professional development and seek to increase retention of the ECE workforce in these rural areas.
