The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston (UTMB) was awarded a $593,598 Project Grant through the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Research Infrastructure Programs (CFDA 93.351) to acquire a Waters Desorption Electrospray Ionization (DESI) XS XEVO TQ Absolute Mass Spectrometry Imaging (MSI) system. This specialized instrument will be used to support drug discovery and development research at UTMB's Sealy Institute for Drug Discovery, with applications in areas such as infectious disease, kidney disease, and neuroscience. The DESI XS TQ Absolute system provides enhanced metabolite detection and high spatial resolution imaging capabilities to visualize drugs, metabolites, and biomarkers within tissue samples, supporting projects aimed at identifying druggable targets, evaluating drug pharmacokinetics, and discovering new therapeutic biomarkers. This award will enable expanded access to MSI technology for UTMB investigators and facilitate new MSI-based research initiatives that leverage the analytical advantages of the DESI XS TQ Absolute system. The project period is from May 1, 2025 to April 30, 2026.
