The National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS) awarded a $1,469,739 Project Grant under the Biomedical Research and Research Training program (CFDA 93.859) to the Research Foundation of the City University of New York (RFCUNY) - Advanced Science Research Center. The grant, awarded on August 15, 2024, will be used to purchase a TIMSTOF-FLEX MALDI-2 high-resolution mass spectrometer with trapped-ion mobility and dual ion-source capabilities. This instrumentation will support biomedical research projects across twelve laboratories at CUNY and nearby institutions, focusing on conformational dynamics of light-sensitive proteins and macromolecular assemblies, as well as metabolic signals regulating tumor progression, axonal regeneration, and neurodegenerative processes. The advanced mass spectrometry capabilities will enable separation of challenging isomeric and isobaric species, enhance sensitivity and resolution of molecular measurements, and provide integrated MALDI-imaging and omics analysis. The instrument will be housed and managed within the ASRC Mass Spectrometry Core Shared Facility to advance collaborative research efforts in structural biology, neuroscience, and other biomedical disciplines.
