The institute, co-directed by Christine Johnston and Leigh Anne Lieberman of Western Washington University, will train 30 higher education faculty and advanced graduate...
- This Project Grant award, provided by the National Science Foundation's Social, Behavioral, and Economic Sciences (CFDA 47.075) program, funds a comprehensive archaeological study of early human settlements in rural settings. The research builds on previous work, combining targeted excavations and remote sensing techniques to examine site occupancy during both the height and decline of the local society. The $236,131 award, valid from January 15, 2025 to December 31, 2027, investigates the...
- The National Endowment for the Humanities awarded a $249,991 Project Grant to New York University under the Promotion of the Humanities Research program (CFDA 45.161). The grant will fund "The Antefixa Project," a scholarly digital initiative to document and explain the contributions of diverse artistic communities in ancient Italy between 500-75 BCE. The project applies humanistic, digital, computational, and scientific methods to archaeological remains of sacred sculpture to...
- This $268,585 Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation (NSF) Division of Behavioral and Cognitive Sciences (CFDA 47.075) supports long-term research examining human-environment interactions along the Pacific Coast. The research team from the University of Nevada, Reno will conduct archaeological surveys and excavations, radiocarbon dating, and stable isotope analysis of marine shells and fish remains to develop a chronology of coastal occupation and paleoenvironmental change over...
- This $185,194 National Science Foundation project grant supports research into the role of human and animal mobility and migration in enabling the persistence of cities in fragile environments. Led by Stony Brook University under the Social, Behavioral, and Economic Sciences program (CFDA 47.075), the research team will examine skeletal remains from one ancient city in a floodplain region using strontium, neodymium, and lead isotope analysis to determine the geographic origins of human and...
- This National Science Foundation (NSF) Division of Polar Programs Project Grant, awarded on September 1, 2023 for $198,250, supports the rapid-response coring and sampling of an archaeological site in northern Iceland facing imminent loss due to climate-driven coastal erosion. The grant aims to document the Hafnarbãdir site, a large and specialized early marine fishing or whaling settlement with the potential to advance understanding of Viking Age economies in Iceland. The research will be...
- This federal Project Grant award from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) Office of Digital Humanities (CFDA 45.169) supports a $349,812 research project titled "The Archaeology of Indigenous Agricultural Landscapes: Digital Approaches to Documentation, Mapping, and Interpretation". The project, led by Dartmouth College, will employ advanced digital remote sensing techniques including drone-based LiDAR, thermography, and infrared imaging, along with terrestrial...
- This $145,159 Project Grant awarded by the National Endowment for the Humanities under the Promotion of the Humanities Research program (CFDA 45.161) will support the research project "BUILDING RESILIENCE: ARCHAEOLOGICAL LANDSCAPES, CLIMATE ANOMALIES, AND RISK MITIGATION ON THE NORTH COAST OF PERU, 1100 BCE-PRESENT." The project aims to investigate how archaeological dams, diversion canals, and reservoirs on the North Coast of Peru create refugia on the landscape during flood events...
- This three-year project grant from the National Science Foundation's Division of Behavioral and Cognitive Sciences, under the Social, Behavioral, and Economic Sciences program (CFDA 47.075), provides $105,569 to the University of Connecticut to conduct research on human behavior within the context of long-term environmental change during the last glacial period from approximately 71,000 to 21,000 years ago. The research will combine high-resolution paleoclimate and zooarchaeological data from...
- This Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation's (NSF) Social, Behavioral, and Economic Sciences (CFDA 47.075) program provides $191,700 to Arizona State University (ASU) to investigate changes in prehistoric human foraging, mobility patterns, and population dynamics in response to environmental change during the later Pleistocene. The research aims to provide broader context to occupations in a coastal region by comparing new archaeological data analyses to detailed models of the...
NEH-HFRI: THE ARCHAEOLOGY OF SMALL ISLANDS IN THE NORTHEAST MEDITERRANEAN [ISLANDS OCCUPY A SPECIAL PLACE IN THE HISTORY OF HUMAN SOCIETIES AND IN CONTEMPORARY CULTURAL IMAGINATIONS. IN THE ANCIENT WORLD, ISLAND LIFE INCLUDED SANCTUARIES, SETTLEMENTS, TRADE SYSTEMS, AND LEGENDARY POINTS OF REFERENCE. ISLAND ARCHAEOLOGY, NOW A WELL-ESTABLISHED SUBFIELD OF ARCHAEOLOGY, HAS BROUGHT SIGNIFICANT ADVANCES TO OUR UNDERSTANDING OF HUMAN MIGRATION, EVOLUTION, AND SOCIAL COMPLEXITY. YET SMALL ISLANDS ARE REGULARLY LEFT OUT OF THE PICTURE, DUE TO THE PARTICULAR CHALLENGES OF HUMAN OCCUPATION AND CARRYING OUT RESEARCH ON THEM. NEVERTHELESS, SMALL ISLANDS SHED LIGHT ON SOME OF THE LEAST KNOWN PATTERNS AND SCALES OF HUMAN ADAPTABILITY, ENDURANCE, AND ACTIVITY IN MARGINAL ENVIRONMENTS FROM PREHISTORIC TO MODERN TIMES. THIS COLLABORATIVE PROJECT BRINGS TOGETHER RESEARCHERS FROM THE U.S., GREECE, AND ELSEWHERE TO DEVELOP NEW METHODOLOGICAL AND COMPARATIVE FRAMEWORKS FOR SMALL-ISLAND STUDIES BASED ON RECENT RESEARCH IN GREECE, ONE OF THE WORLD?S MOST SIGNIFICANT ISLAND THEATERS.]
