The University of Michigan received a $2,314,582 Project Grant award from the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR) under the Oral Diseases and Disorders Research (CFDA 93.121) program. The award supports the development of a new class of antimicrobial treatments that inhibit fluoride efflux in dental pathogens to reverse oral dysbiosis and eliminate early childhood caries. The research team will pursue a multiscale approach to develop fluoride efflux inhibitors targeting key microbes like Streptococcus mutans and Candida albicans, as well as establish methods to tailor fluoride-based therapies based on patient-specific oral microbiome data. This collaborative project aims to potentiate the antimicrobial effects of fluoride and inhibit growth of oral pathogens to treat oral dysbiosis and prevent early childhood tooth decay. The award period runs from September 2024 to June 2029.
