The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC) was awarded a $4.2 million project grant from the National Institutes of Health's National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) under the Mental Health Research Grants program to evaluate the multigenerational effects of a psychosocial maternal depression intervention against COVID-19 stressors. Over the three-year period from September 2022 to September 2025, UNC will leverage an existing longitudinal cohort study in rural Pakistan to examine the impacts of economic shocks and uncertainty during the first two years of the pandemic on maternal and child mental health at age six. The study will also assess whether participation in a previous psychosocial maternal depression intervention leads to increased resilience against worsening mental health during the pandemic. Duke University and the University of Melbourne were awarded subgrants totaling approximately $500,000 to assist with data collection, management, analysis and dissemination activities.
