The Oregon Health & Science University was awarded a three-year, $3.956 million project grant from the National Institutes of Health National Institute on Aging under the Aging Research program (CFDA 93.866). The grant will support research into the role of G protein-coupled receptor 39 in age-related vascular cognitive impairment.

Specifically, the university researchers will test the hypothesis that endothelial-pericyte EET/GPR39 signaling plays a protective role against aging- and small vessel disease-related cognitive decline by preserving capillary blood flow. They will examine changes in brain oxylipins and downstream signaling in isolated pericytes from mice at various ages. Additionally, they will determine if GPR39 deletion exacerbates cognitive impairment from chronic cerebral hypoperfusion and whether a GPR39 agonist can protect against impairment. The studies aim to further understanding of vascular dementia mechanisms and propose a potential novel therapy.
