This $1,103,953 federal Project Grant award from the National Institute on Aging (CFDA 93.866 Aging Research) will fund a study to measure the epidemiology of cognitive impairment and dementia among people living with HIV in rural, southwestern Uganda. The study will be conducted by the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) and its sub-grantees the Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST) and the Kabwohe Clinical Research Center (KCRC) in Uganda. The study aims to determine the prevalence and classification of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and Alzheimer's-related dementia (ADRD) among older HIV-positive adults in Uganda, identify pathophysiologic contributors through biomarkers and neuroimaging, estimate the psychosocial and economic impacts of MCI/ADRD, and develop novel explanatory models using machine learning techniques. The research will enroll approximately 600 older adults, both HIV-positive and HIV-negative, to characterize the clinical spectrum and societal impact of cognitive impairment in this population. The study began on September 15, 2024 and is expected to be completed by August 31, 2025.
