Physical Sciences Inc. (PSI) received a $302,417 Project Grant from the National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS) under the Biomedical Research and Research Training program (CFDA 93.859) to develop a novel in-line biomanufacturing process analytical technology tool. This tool will enable real-time monitoring of biomolecules in host cells and their environment during large-scale bioreactor operations for gene therapy viral vector production. The technology combines deep ultraviolet excited optical spectroscopic techniques, including Raman scattering and autofluorescence, to differentiate cellular biomolecules like DNA and protein. PSI is collaborating with the University of Massachusetts Lowell, which will provide expertise in bioreactor process development for viral vector production, to test and characterize the virtual chromatographic cytometry technology. The goal is to improve understanding and monitoring of bioprocesses to support the development of efficient and robust manufacturing processes for large-scale production of viral vector products for gene therapy applications.
