The National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR) awarded a $398,785 Project Grant under the Oral Diseases and Disorders Research (CFDA 93.121) federal grant program to Regendodent, Inc. The grant supports the development of REGENDOGEL (RG), a new class of dental material that stimulates the regeneration of dental pulp and dentin damaged by decay or trauma. RG is envisioned to replace currently used non-degradable silicate cements and will initially be validated for use in vital pulp therapy, with eventual applications in endodontic root canal therapy and dentin restoration. The grant will compare the original RG formulation using bovine-derived dentin matrix molecules with a new porcine-derived formulation, as well as characterize the effects of a direct restorative (resin-modified glass ionomer) and two antimicrobial agents (colloidal silver nanoparticles and epsilon-poly-L-lysine) on pulp and dentin regeneration. The ultimate goal is to develop the first biodegradable, antimicrobial, immunomodulatory, and regenerative hydrogel product for endodontic therapy.
