The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) awarded a $262,627 Project Grant under the Mental Health Research Grants program (CFDA 93.242) to the University of Colorado-Denver. The 3-year grant will fund the design and testing of a novel peer navigator mHealth intervention aimed at increasing the uptake of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) and modern contraception among high-risk female university students in Zambia. The project will initially adapt an existing mobile app (PEBRA) using human-centered design and qualitative methods to create a tablet-based platform for peer navigators to promote and track PrEP and contraception use. This will be followed by a small prospective single-arm trial to evaluate the functionality of the app and acceptability of the peer navigator intervention. The project will then conduct a single-site hybrid effectiveness-implementation randomized controlled trial to determine the intervention's impact on PrEP and contraceptive use, understand the underlying behavioral mechanisms, and assess implementation factors for potential scale-up in high HIV prevalence, low- and middle-income country settings.
