The State of Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources, Division of Forestry and Wildlife will receive $1,264,640.40 from the Department of the Interior Bureau of Reclamation under the WaterSMART (Sustain and Manage America’s Resources for Tomorrow) federal grant program to protect 800 additional acres of forested and wetland habitat in central Kohala Mountains, Hawaii from invasive feral pigs. Through this project grant awarded on March 30, 2023 and set to be completed by December 31, 2026, all feral pigs will be removed from the identified region and a fence will be constructed to prevent reintroduction of the invasive species. Preserving these 800 acres will protect several federally endangered plant species and improve the timing and quantity of available water. The award is being administered in partnership with the Kohala Watershed Partnership, an innovative consortium of 11 major landowners and the County of Hawaii Department of Water Supply that identified feral pigs as a top threat to Kohala's forests in its approved management plan.
