This $176,319 planning grant from the Fogarty International Center (CFDA 93.989 International Research and Research Training) will strengthen the collaboration between Oregon State University (OSU) and two institutions in Ndola, Zambia - the Tropical Diseases Research Centre (TDRC) and the Copperbelt University School of Medicine (CBU-SOM). The grant aims to: 1) Train TDRC and CBU-SOM researchers to assess children's neurodevelopment using the Bayley Scales of Infant Development, 4th Edition; 2) Enroll 200 HIV-negative mothers/offspring and assess the practice of geophagy (soil/clay consumption), maternal exposure to heavy metals, and impacts on children's neurodevelopment at 12 months; and 3) Determine whether the gut microbiota differs between geophageous and non-geophageous mothers. The project will also work with a Zambian public health advisory board to develop strategies for addressing the impacts of maternal geophagy on child health. This planning grant, awarded on September 15, 2025, will lay the groundwork for future research on this critical global health issue.
