The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) awarded a $225,621 Project Grant (CFDA 93.242 - Mental Health Research Grants) to Northwestern University to study the relationship between estrogen levels and psychotic-like experiences during the transition to adolescence. The research aims to examine how changes in estrogen during this developmental period impact brain structure, function, cognition, and the emergence of psychosis symptoms in biological females. Northwestern University is collaborating with the University of Texas at Dallas and the University of Oregon on this research project. The funding will be used to leverage the strengths of the ABCD study dataset to comprehensively model the interactions between estrogen, neural mechanisms, and psychosis vulnerability over time within biological females. The goal is to provide insights into potential sex-specific intervention targets and timing to reduce or delay the transition to psychosis.
