Project Grant R21HL173807
- The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) awarded a $410,449 Project Grant under the Cardiovascular Diseases Research (CFDA 93.837) program to The Leland Stanford Junior University (Stanford University) on August 1, 2025. The funding supports research to develop novel synthetic biology strategies that would enable the quantitative and dynamic regulation of growth factors and cytokines produced from human induced pluripotent stem cell-derived endothelial cells (iPSC-ECs). The goal...
- The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) awarded a $775,720 project grant to Yale University under the Cardiovascular Diseases Research federal grant program (CFDA 93.837) to conduct research on the role of endothelial protocadherins in vascular development and disease. The project aims to: 1) determine the effects of knocking out or inhibiting the protocadherin gamma (PCDHG) cluster in endothelial cells in mouse models of vascular inflammation, 2) elucidate the mechanism by which...
- The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) awarded a $496,255 Project Grant under the Cardiovascular Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.837) to Vivita Technologies, Inc. (Davis, CA) to validate its patented SPEAR Platform™ technology for developing unfixed, immune-compatible, and regenerative xenogeneic biomaterials for transcatheter heart valve replacements. The project aims to produce BARE™ patches derived from porcine pericardium that can avoid immune rejection, integrate with...
- The National Institutes of Health's National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute awarded Fluidform Inc. a $766,107 Project Grant under the Cardiovascular Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.837) from April 1, 2021 to March 31, 2022. The grant funds the development of an advanced bioprosthetic collagen heart valve using 3D printing techniques to recreate the collagen fiber architecture and mechanical properties of native heart valve leaflets. Fluidform will collaborate with Carnegie Mellon...
- This federal Project Grant award from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), under the Cardiovascular Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.837), provides $776,511 to the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center (Seattle, WA) to develop a 3D engineered hemogenic vascular niche model that supports the induction of hematopoietic fates from human pluripotent stem cell-derived endothelium. The primary objective is to leverage this innovative platform to investigate how intrinsic arterial...
- The National Heart Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI), through the Cardiovascular Diseases Research grant program (CFDA 93.837), awarded a $128,085 project grant to The Leland Stanford Junior University (Stanford University) to investigate the role of the COUP-TFII transcription factor in human vein development. The research aims to establish whether COUP-TFII is required for human vein endothelial cell specification and identify the specific protein domains of COUP-TFII involved. The project...
- This $1,082,412 Project Grant awarded by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (CFDA 93.837 Cardiovascular Diseases Research) supports research and development of tissue-engineered vascular grafts (TEVGs) using mesenchymal stem/stromal cells (MSCs) and extracellular vesicles (EVs). The University of Pittsburgh, the awardee, aims to optimize their silk scaffold-based TEVG construct seeded with EVs to advance it towards clinical translation. Key objectives include conducting in vitro...
- This Project Grant award from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (CFDA 93.837 Cardiovascular Diseases Research) supports research to define the role of the RNA-binding protein G3BP1 in blood vessel formation. The $147,486 award to Yale University will fund the development of a novel zebrafish model to investigate how G3BP1-mediated post-transcriptional regulation impacts vascular development. The overall objective is to enhance understanding of the gene regulatory networks...
- The National Heart Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI), through the Cardiovascular Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.837), awarded a $709,718 Project Grant to Florida International University (FIU) on September 1, 2025. The objective of this award is to develop methods for storing and preserving living valvular allografts (tissue transplants) ex vivo, to maintain their viability and availability for cardiac valve transplantation procedures. The project aims to integrate a preservation solution...
- The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) awarded a $306,102 project grant under the Cardiovascular Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.837) to Peca Labs Inc. to develop a novel, fully-polymeric, biomimetic prosthetic mitral valve. The objective is to create a valve that combines the positive characteristics of both biological and mechanical mitral valves to improve durability, performance, and patient outcomes. Peca Labs will subject the polymer leaflet material to hydrodynamic...
The National Heart Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI), part of the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH), awarded a $460,625 Project Grant under the Cardiovascular Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.837) to Yale University on August 10, 2025. The objective of this project is to develop highly tunable and customizable Tissue Engineered Vascular Conduits (TEVCs) using a novel bioprinting method that can directly print fully physiological materials, including cell-laden tissues. The project aims to incorporate universal immunocompatible human induced pluripotent stem cell-derived cells, including endothelial cells, into the bioprinted TEVCs to generate highly biomimicking living vessels with a functional endothelium. These matured TEVCs will then be implanted in vivo into humanized rats to evaluate their performance in treating single ventricle defects, a type of cardiovascular disease. The project is scheduled for completion by May 31, 2027.
