The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) awarded a $253,500 Project Grant (CFDA 93.837 Cardiovascular Diseases Research) to the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai (ISMMS) to develop and refine a wearable sensor system called "SleepTronix" for continuous assessment of sleep, breathing patterns, and circadian rhythm parameters in individuals with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). The project aims to overcome limitations of the current clinical metric, Apnea-Hypopnea Index (AHI), by using the SleepTronix system to derive accurate estimates of AHI as well as a novel metric called "Ventilatory Burden" that better characterizes the underlying OSA pathophysiology. The project will be conducted from June 1, 2024, to May 31, 2026, with the goal of establishing the utility of wearable devices coupled with innovative measurements to shift the paradigm in OSA management.
